Avis Car Rental Introduce
For residents and visitors navigating the expansive and diverse landscape of California, a reliable car rental service is often a fundamental necessity. In Orange County, particularly for those flying into John Wayne Airport (SNA), a convenient and efficient car rental experience can significantly impact travel plans. This article delves into Avis Car Rental, specifically its branch located at 18601 Airport Way, Santa Ana, CA 92707, USA. As a globally recognized brand, Avis aims to provide a range of vehicles and services to meet various customer needs. However, understanding the specific realities and customer experiences at this particular location is crucial for Californians seeking a seamless car rental process.
Avis is a household name in the car rental industry, often chosen for its widespread presence and perceived reliability. The John Wayne Airport location is designed to offer direct access to vehicles for air travelers, making it a seemingly straightforward choice. However, like any high-volume service provider, customer experiences can vary. This overview will provide insights into the accessibility of this Avis branch, the services it typically offers, and critical considerations highlighted by real customer feedback. For locals, whether you're a frequent flyer or occasionally need a rental for specific events or repairs, this information will help you decide if Avis at SNA is the right fit for your transportation requirements in the Golden State. We aim to present a balanced view, acknowledging both the established conveniences and potential challenges.
Avis Car Rental is conveniently located directly at John Wayne Airport (SNA) at 18601 Airport Way, Santa Ana, CA 92707, USA. This prime on-airport location is a significant advantage for travelers arriving by air, as it allows for immediate access to rental counters and vehicles upon deplaning.
For airline passengers, the rental counter is typically found within the terminal, often between baggage claim areas (e.g., between baggage claim 2 & 3). After completing paperwork, customers can generally walk a short distance across the street to the parking structure to pick up their reserved vehicle on level zero. This direct airport integration eliminates the need for shuttle services to off-site locations, which can save considerable time and hassle, especially for those with luggage or tight schedules. For locals in Santa Ana, Irvine, and other Orange County communities, this means easy access for pick-up and drop-off when using John Wayne Airport as their travel hub. The location operates with extended hours, generally from early morning until late evening (6:00 AM to 11:00 PM, Sunday through Saturday), catering to a wide range of flight arrival and departure times. This direct, on-airport accessibility is a key draw for many Californians seeking a convenient rental solution.
Services Offered:
- Wide range of vehicle categories, including economy, compact, mid-size, standard, and full-size cars, as well as various SUVs (standard, intermediate), minivans, and potentially luxury vehicles.
- On-site rental counter and vehicle pick-up/drop-off directly within the John Wayne Airport (SNA) terminal area, offering immediate access for air travelers.

- Support for Avis Preferred and other loyalty programs, which may offer expedited service.
- One-way rental options for customers needing to pick up at SNA and drop off at a different Avis location.
- Standard policies regarding fuel (full to full) and insurance options.
- Customer service support for reservations, modifications, and general inquiries.
Features / Highlights:
- Direct Airport Location: The most significant highlight is its on-site presence at John Wayne Airport (SNA), allowing for a quick transition from plane to car without needing an external shuttle.
- Brand Recognition: As a major global car rental company, Avis offers the assurance of a large network and established policies.
- Variable Vehicle Availability: While Avis generally has a broad fleet, specific vehicle availability can be an issue, as noted by a customer who reserved a 7-seater SUV but it was unavailable.
- Inconsistent Vehicle Condition: Customer reviews highlight significant concerns regarding vehicle cleanliness and maintenance. Instances of strong odors (cigarettes, ammonia/bleach masking vomit), visible dirt and damage (dents, chips, scratches), and safety issues (flat tire, broken passenger seat) have been reported, indicating a lack of consistent pre-rental inspection and cleaning.
- Customer Service Challenges: Multiple reviews point to highly unprofessional and disappointing customer service at the counter, including staff loudly discussing personal problems, ignoring customers, rude responses (e.g., "It's not us!"), and unhelpful attitudes. Attempts to contact management also reportedly went unanswered.
- Safety Concerns: A customer reported being given a car with an actively losing tire pressure and a missing air cap, raising significant safety concerns.
- Loyalty Program Limitations: Even high-tier loyalty members (e.g., President's Circle) may find that benefits like choosing their vehicle from a lot are not consistently available at this location.
- Billing Discrepancies: Instances of being told one thing by phone customer service (e.g., no charge for early return) and then being charged differently at drop-off suggest potential communication or policy application issues.

For locals in California, particularly those in Orange County and regular users of John Wayne Airport (SNA), Avis Car Rental at 18601 Airport Way, Santa Ana, presents a mixed bag of suitability. On one hand, its direct on-airport location is undeniably convenient. For busy Californians flying frequently for business or leisure, the ability to walk directly from baggage claim to the Avis counter and then to a rental car within the airport structure offers a significant time-saving advantage. This eliminates the need for shuttle services to off-site locations, which can be a deciding factor for those valuing efficiency above all else. The familiar branding of Avis also provides a sense of reliability for many, given its widespread presence.
However, based on recent customer experiences, the suitability of this particular Avis location for locals is severely impacted by recurring issues related to vehicle condition and customer service. Californians expect a certain standard of quality and professionalism, and consistent reports of dirty cars, mechanical issues like deflating tires, and broken interior components (such as a broken passenger seat) raise significant safety and comfort concerns. Moreover, highly unprofessional interactions with staff, including rudeness, disinterest, and a perceived lack of accountability, directly contradict the expectations of reliable service from a major brand. For a local user who values a hassle-free experience and reliable transportation, these issues can lead to significant inconvenience, wasted time, and a sense of dissatisfaction.
While some might still opt for Avis due to its on-airport convenience and brand familiarity, the provided customer feedback suggests that locals should approach this specific location with caution. It may be suitable for those who are prepared to thoroughly inspect their vehicle upon pick-up and are willing to be assertive if issues arise. For many Californians, who often rely on their rental cars for critical travel, the documented inconsistencies in vehicle quality and customer service might outweigh the benefit of its convenient location, leading them to seek alternatives that offer a more consistently positive and reliable experience for their mobility needs within the Golden State.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Horrible experience with Avis (via Costco Travel) — unprofessional and unacceptableWe booked a 7-seater SUV through Costco Travel, fulfilled by Avis (Confirmation #35906923US3), and this turned out to be one of the worst rental experiences we’ve ever had. When we arrived, Avis didn’t have the vehicle we reserved. A staff member went over to Budget (in the same building) to check if they had any cars available and came back saying they didn’t. However, we showed him on Budget’s website that two vehicles were showing as available at that exact location. Despite that, we were eventually given a car in horrible condition. The vehicle smelled strongly of cigarettes or possibly worse, was visibly dirty inside and out, full of dents, chips, and scratches, and the passenger seat was broken, completely unsafe and unacceptable. It was obvious the car had not been cleaned or inspected at all.The customer service experience was equally disappointing. At the Budget counter, two female employees were loudly discussing their personal problems, ignoring customers. One turned her chair away from us, and the other was eating a snack while interacting with us. When I asked why the car wasn’t ready, one of them slammed her hand on the desk and snapped, “It’s not us!” clearly irritated that we interrupted their conversation. We were then told to “ask Enterprise,” and even mocked about traffic, being told we wouldn’t get to our destination on time anyway. The manager never showed up or returned any calls.Only one male employee made any effort to help, but the overall service was shockingly unprofessional. We booked with Avis via Costco Travel expecting a clean vehicle and reliable customer service, but received the opposite. We won’t be returning to this location and are strongly reconsidering using Avis in the future.
Jul 06, 2025 · Minehli Arakelians GheshlaghBRUH...Rentals shouldn't be this complicated. I expect by have chosen this company that my safety was of the utmost importance. Sent me home in a CX-50 with a back left tire actively losing air. Awoke to a flat tire before work, which extremely inconvenienced me. Thankful I invested in a portable air pump as I was able to solve this issue myself...or so I thought. Upon inspection, this tire lacked an air cap. Rescheduled a client and drove to Walmart to purchase a tire cap. By the end of the day, PSI dropped from 39 to 31. The air cap provided no resolution to this rental nightmare. Had no choice but to risk driving to the rental place before closing to exchange the car. Using only side streets. Opted out of using the freeway because i felt unsafe. A much needed added mention...this car smelled like it was drenched in lemon scented ammonia/bleach. I think they tried masking the underlying puke like smell, I along with my best friend most definitely picked up on. Exchanged that car. Was then put in a Nissan Murano, outdated yet more reliable than the CX-50. Smelled normal. Ended up needing to return the Nissan a day earlier than the original return date. Was told by customer service that I would not be charged the last day if returned early...however when I dropped off the Nissan, I was told I would be charged for the last day. NPC employees, lazy car inspections, unsafe scammy car service feel. Wouldn't recommend.
Jan 29, 2025 · Taylor Goodwinrented a car for a week in newport beach. there were no floor mats, and while we did our best to keep sand out of the car, this is a beach town and inevitably some sand will get into the car - can’t imagine a scenario where you can perfectly clean your shoes before getting in every time. we took the time to tidy the car and it was nearly spotless, yet we were still charged hundreds of dollars extra for a cleaning fee because the car was not returned in “exactly the same condition it was rented”. had no idea we would need to detail the rental before returning it. why pay hundred of dollars to rent a car only to be charged hundred extra for using it. do not rent from here is my advice- it’s a scam to get extra money and we have never had this issue anywhere else.
Jun 22, 2025 · Lindsay WengerWe were driving to Las Vegas when we realized the AC wasn’t working—the car was unbearably hot, especially driving through the desert. But that wasn’t the worst part. Partway through the drive, we got a low coolant warning, and when we pulled over to check, we found the coolant was almost completely gone. This was a nearly new car with only about 8,000 miles on it, which makes this even more shocking. We were stuck in the desert heat, unable to find coolant anywhere nearby, and couldn’t wait in the sun for the car to cool down. We were forced to drive very slowly and carefully, worried the car might overheat at any moment. It was a physically and mentally exhausting experience—we were overheated, dehydrated, and stressed, all because the car wasn’t properly maintained. And after all that, Avis still charged us for gas from SNA to Las Vegas, even though the car was clearly defective. That felt like a slap in the face. When we finally made it to Vegas late at night, we had to exchange the car. Despite better cars being available, we were given a Dodge with brakes that were incredibly hard to press—again, not safe. We had to go back the next day to switch cars yet again, and while the Kia we ended up with was finally drivable, it didn’t have any windshield washer fluid. At that point, we were honestly just tired of dealing with the whole situation. This whole rental was a nightmare. It put our health, safety, and vacation at risk, and cost us a lot of time and stress.
Apr 06, 2025 · Y ZVery friendly staff at this Avis location, I have zero complaints about the people who work here. That said something seems off about the processes at this location.1 - Our family has rented from this location, many times and even with well documented gas levels at pick up and drop off (receipts, photos, talking with the staff) still receive a fuel surcharge on our final bill. A quick call to customer service resolves this, but it makes me wonder if there’s a larger issue of how they do or do not correctly calculate fuel mileage.2 - Poor QA on rental vehicles. Check your tires! The vehicle we received for a long trip out of state came with very bald tires, we did not notice this until we were halfway through our trip. The tires were very unsafe and it looks like they were never been rotated or maintained. also, if you are renting a hybrid, do not expect the gas or electric to be full. Our hybrid came with no charge and only 3/4 of gas.
