Avis Car Rental Introduce
For many Michiganders, especially those frequently traveling for business or leisure, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) serves as a vital hub. While flying gets us to our destination, getting around once we land often requires a reliable vehicle. That’s where car rental services come into play. In this detailed guide, we’ll focus on Avis Car Rental, specifically their prominent location at 295 Lucas Drive in Detroit, Michigan. We’ll explore what this branch offers to local users, from its accessibility to its services, while also providing an honest look at recent customer experiences. Our aim is to help you, a fellow Michigan resident, make an informed decision when considering Avis for your next journey.
Avis is a globally recognized name in the car rental industry, known for its extensive fleet and presence at major airports worldwide. For us in Michigan, particularly those connected to the flow of travel through DTW, Avis can be a go-to option. However, as with any high-volume service, understanding the nuances of a specific location is crucial. We’ll cover everything from the types of vehicles available to the crucial elements of customer service, drawing on real-world feedback to paint a complete picture. Whether you’re a frequent flyer or occasionally need a rental for a local trip, this overview will equip you with valuable insights into renting from Avis at Detroit Metro Airport.
The Avis Car Rental location is situated at 295 Lucas Dr, Detroit, MI 48242, USA. This address places it squarely within the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) Rental Car Campus. For travelers flying into or out of DTW, accessibility is a primary concern. The Avis counter and car lot are not inside the main terminals but are part of a dedicated rental car facility on Lucas Drive, specifically at the Northeast corner of the airport. Getting there involves a convenient shuttle service from both the McNamara Terminal (Delta) and the Evans Terminal (all other airlines). Signs for Ground Transportation will direct you to the shuttle stops, which are found in the Ground Transportation Centers of both terminal parking garages. The shuttle ride is typically short, around 7 to 11 minutes depending on the terminal. This 24/7 operating location ensures that whether you're arriving on a late-night flight or departing at dawn, you can access your rental. For local Michiganders who might be picking up or dropping off family members, or perhaps using the airport as a starting point for a road trip, the dedicated rental car campus, while requiring a shuttle, centralizes all major rental agencies, streamlining the process once you're at the campus.
Extensive Vehicle Fleet: Avis offers a broad selection of vehicles to suit diverse travel needs and budgets. This includes fuel-efficient economy and compact cars (like a Kia Rio or Soul) for solo travelers or short trips, mid-size and full-size sedans (such as a Toyota Corolla or Camry) for comfortable family travel, and a wide array of SUVs (e.g., Toyota RAV4, Ford Edge, Chevrolet Suburban) for more space or specific terrain needs. They also typically provide minivans (like a Chrysler Pacifica) for larger groups, and luxury or convertible cars for special occasions. Passenger vans (e.g., 12-passenger Ford Transit) are available for group travel.
Flexible Rental Periods: Customers can book rentals for daily, weekly, or longer-term periods, accommodating everything from short business trips to extended vacations or temporary vehicle needs.
Optional Protection and Add-ons: Avis provides various optional protection products and insurance coverage, such as Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) and Personal Accident Insurance (PAI), for added peace of mind. Other available add-ons typically include GPS navigation systems, child safety seats (infant, child, and booster), and SiriusXM radio.
One-Way Rentals: For those with varying pick-up and drop-off locations, Avis often facilitates one-way rentals, allowing for flexible travel itineraries across Michigan or even to other states.
Avis Preferred Program: This loyalty program offers expedited service, allowing members to bypass the counter at many locations, go straight to their car, and earn points for free rental days or upgrades. This can significantly reduce wait times.
24-Hour Drop-off: The Detroit Metro Airport Avis location offers 24-hour drop-off, providing convenience for early morning or late-night returns.
Dedicated Customer Service Staff: Despite common challenges at high-volume airport locations, feedback highlights individual staff members who are "very professional, friendly, had a great big smile while helping the whole time and actively engaged with eye contact." This indicates a strong effort by on-the-ground employees to provide positive interactions even under pressure.
Potential for Quick Check-in (when staffed): While wait times can be an issue, one reviewer noted a "quick check-in" once they reached the customer service desk, suggesting that the process itself can be efficient if staffing levels are adequate.
Wide Vehicle Availability (typically): The presence of "plenty of cars" is a common goal for airport rental locations, aiming to ensure customers receive a vehicle, even if not their first choice. This branch, as mentioned in a review, often has a good selection available.
Global Brand Reliability: As a major international brand, Avis adheres to certain standards of vehicle maintenance and service, offering a baseline of reliability that many customers expect.
Airport Convenience: Being located directly on the airport's rental car campus with a dedicated shuttle service offers significant convenience for air travelers.

For Michigan residents, particularly those utilizing Detroit Metro Airport for their travel needs, Avis Car Rental at 295 Lucas Drive offers a crucial service. Its location directly on the DTW Rental Car Campus, accessible via dedicated shuttle, provides an integrated solution for air travelers needing ground transportation. The 24/7 operation is a significant advantage, accommodating early flights and late arrivals common for business travelers and vacationers alike.
While customer reviews sometimes point to challenges with wait times, this often appears to stem from resource and management issues rather than the individual effort of the staff. Indeed, positive feedback frequently highlights the dedication of the on-site customer service representatives. For any Michigan resident needing airport-based car rental, understanding these aspects can help in planning and ultimately lead to a more satisfactory experience with Avis.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This is the worst car rental experience I've ever had. More than two hours to wait in line, and then I was given a car that had no keys in it. So I had to go back and wait another 45 minutes for them to issue another car. 3 hours to rent a car is ludicrous. Pay the extra money and go elsewhere. The 2 staff certainly tried their best - this is a resource and management issue. Review after review shows that they don't staff enough people here, but nothing changes. It will be a hard sell for me to rent from here again.
Jun 24, 2025 · Christopher MWelcome to Detroit 😊 Other than only have 2 customer service people causing a long wait, I have no complaints. Once I did approach the customer service desk it was a quick check-in. I got my keys. She was very professional friendly had a great big smile while helping the whole time and actively engaged with eye contact. If I’m being petty - I don’t like the Ford Escape but I could’ve reserved a pricey car- nope.
Jun 12, 2025 · SaRenna LoveBooking and pickup were pretty abysmal. Dropoff was much smoother. While booking online I couldn't apply my Avis points because something was wrong with the DTW system.Because my flight was delayed more than 1 hour, my reservation was automatically canceled and I was told to see an agent despite the system saying that the threshold for reservations was two hours or more past pickup... It had only been an hour and half past when I received the notice. Then, the bus takes a while to arrive while other rental companies have transport coming constantly.Lines are backed up at the preferred station with over half the board needing to see an agent despite the fact that it should be as easy as picking any car on the lot. The workers at the desk are clueless and the wait was at least 15-20 mins.My car was hand delivered to me instead of having to go to the spot. It had paint damage in the front, a sticking out tow anchor that wasn't retractable, no windshield wiper fluid, worn tires and a gross bag of something that exploded in the trunk. When alerting the staff, they could care less.Return went relatively smooth though and I again notified the staff of the condition of the vehicle upon pickup. The bus was right there to take me back to the terminal.Horrible service and a major reorganization needed. Never had a bad Avis experience until this one.
Jun 13, 2025 · Dallas MPickup here was horrendous... Full lobby at 11pm with one person working the counter. Finally opened a second counter after an hour. Didn't have requested vehicle class, had to wait for them to finish cleaning one of a different class after offering a pickup truck. Took about 2 hours from bus drop off to driving away.Car quality was good, 57000 miles, everything was working except the parking sensors. Typical dings dents scratches and curb rash on the rims.Drop off was a breeze, no fuss. Took a minute to figure out the correct bus back to the correct terminal thought. All employees were wonderful and professional, there just weren't enough of them. People rent cars ahead of time, so there should be a good idea the volume of people at a given time. 30-50 people in line at midnight is ridiculous. At least I didn't have business meetings at 7am like some of the people in line. Do better Avis, definitely room for improvement!
Jul 01, 2025 · James H.My car was fine, but I had an awful experience with your shuttle in a way that you should seriously address.First, on the pickup from the airport: Your driver let us out at the “Preferred” stop without alerting us (ever) that there are actually TWO stops — a “Preferred” one and a “Regular” one. The only communication was from the driver upon boarding who asked whether we had a reservation. We said yes. He should have clearly announced at the outset that he’d make two stops, and we just get out at the “Regular” second one.The return process was far worse. There were two shuttles lined up after returning the car. We boarded them from the back (aka, we walked up behind the shuttle.) We were never told that this was the shuttle for the McNamara terminal as opposed to the Evans one. Perhaps the other awaiting shuttle was for Evans, but that also was not announced. So we arrived at the wrong terminal and almost missed our flight, all because of poor advertising. This easily could be solved: Please put up signs or have drivers confirm the correct terminals for each bus before boarding.I had other issues with the slow line to actually check out the car, but this shuttle experience seems eminently solvable and I’d hope you take my advice seriously.
