Avis Car Rental Introduce
For many New Yorkers, accessing a car is a necessity for certain trips, whether it’s for a family vacation, a business engagement outside the five boroughs, or simply a weekend escape. Avis Car Rental is a globally recognized name, and their Midtown Manhattan location aims to serve the diverse needs of the city's residents. However, like any service in a high-demand environment, understanding the nuances of a specific branch is crucial for a smooth experience. This article aims to provide New Yorkers with a clear, engaging, and informative overview of Avis Car Rental on W 43rd Street, drawing on both general company information and candid customer feedback.
While Avis, as a brand, typically offers a wide array of vehicles and services designed for convenience, the local experience can sometimes vary. We will delve into what this particular Midtown location offers, its accessibility, and, importantly, shed light on the direct experiences of real customers. This balanced perspective is intended to help local users make informed decisions when considering Avis for their next car rental in New York City.
Understanding both the potential benefits and the challenges reported by fellow New Yorkers is key to navigating the car rental landscape effectively and ensuring your journey is as trouble-free as possible.
Avis Car Rental is situated in a central and generally accessible part of Midtown Manhattan:
515 W 43rd St, New York, NY 10036, USA
This location on West 43rd Street places it in the bustling Hell's Kitchen neighborhood, providing relatively good connectivity for New Yorkers. It’s within reasonable proximity to major transportation hubs, including the Port Authority Bus Terminal, and is accessible via several subway lines (such as the A, C, E, N, Q, R, W, S, 1, 2, 3, 7 lines). This central placement can be a major advantage for residents who prefer to pick up a car within Manhattan rather than traveling to an airport.
For those planning to drive out of the city, the branch's location offers decent access to the West Side Highway, which can facilitate a quicker exit from the densest parts of Manhattan. However, navigating the immediate area around 43rd Street, especially during peak hours, can still involve typical New York City traffic and parking challenges, which renters should factor into their pick-up and drop-off plans. The operating hours for this location are typically Sunday through Saturday, 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, though it's important to note holiday closures may apply.
Avis Car Rental, as a major global brand, generally offers a comprehensive suite of services designed to meet diverse customer needs. While specific offerings may vary by location and availability, standard services typically include:
- Wide Range of Vehicle Classes: Avis typically provides a broad selection of vehicles, from economical compact cars (e.g., Kia Rio) suitable for city driving, to mid-size and full-size sedans (e.g., Toyota Corolla, Toyota Camry) for general travel.
- SUVs and Vans: Options often include various sizes of SUVs (e.g., Toyota RAV4, Chevrolet Equinox, Chevrolet Suburban) for families or those needing more space, as well as minivans (e.g., Chrysler Pacifica) and 12- or 15-passenger vans for larger groups.
- Luxury and Specialty Cars: Depending on the location and inventory, premium vehicles (e.g., Genesis G70) and specialty cars like convertibles (e.g., Ford Mustang Convertible) may be available for specific occasions.
- Electric and Hybrid Vehicles: Avis is integrating more sustainable options into its fleet, with electric vehicles (e.g., Kia EV6, Tesla Model 3) and hybrids (e.g., Toyota Prius Hybrid) becoming increasingly available, offering fuel efficiency and a modern driving experience.
- Flexible Rental Durations: Customers can typically opt for daily, weekly, or monthly rentals to suit short-term needs, weekend trips, or longer-term temporary transportation.
- One-Way Rentals: The convenience of picking up a vehicle at one Avis location and returning it to another (domestically or even into Canada for certain vehicle types) is generally offered, providing flexibility for travel itineraries.
- Optional Add-ons: Customers can typically enhance their rental with amenities such as GPS navigation systems, child safety seats (infant, child, booster), and various protection plans or insurance options.
- Avis Preferred Program: This loyalty program aims to expedite the rental process for frequent renters, offering benefits like bypassing the counter, choosing your own car, and earning points for free rental days.
- E-Toll Service: Avis vehicles are usually equipped with an e-Toll system (transponder), simplifying toll payments. However, as noted in customer feedback, additional fees can apply, and charges may take time to process.
- Mobile App and Online Tools: Avis provides a mobile app and online platform for booking, managing reservations, and checking in, designed to streamline the rental process.
While Avis aims to provide a consistent and high-quality experience globally, customer feedback for the 515 W 43rd St location reveals specific areas that serve as important highlights, both positive and challenging, for local users:
- Vehicle Condition (Potential Concern): A significant highlight, though negative in this case, is the critical importance of checking the vehicle's condition upon pickup. One review starkly points out an instance where a minivan was provided with "UNSAFE" tires (belts visible and shredding) after hundreds of miles of driving. This highlights a critical need for customers to perform thorough checks before leaving the lot. While not a positive highlight for the service, it is a crucial feature for prospective renters to be aware of.
- Challenges with Electric Vehicle Management: The experience with an undercharged electric vehicle and incorrect return location on the rental agreement highlights potential issues with communication and internal system coordination regarding EV rentals and multi-location returns. This indicates that customers renting electric vehicles or planning one-way trips, especially to franchise locations, should double-check all details meticulously.
- Customer Service (Mixed Experiences): While Avis, as a brand, aims for helpful staff, the reviews suggest a mixed experience at this specific location. One account details frustration with incorrect information on the rental agreement and unexpected fees. However, when issues escalated, the willingness of staff to "give me a van that was already reserved for another customer" (in the tire incident) indicates an attempt to resolve critical safety issues, even if it involved reallocating resources.
- Transparency of Fees (Area for Caution): The unexpected "change the return location" fee and the significant E-Toll charges accrued highlight a need for customers to thoroughly read their rental agreements and ask detailed questions about all potential charges, especially for one-way rentals and toll systems. This suggests that while services are offered, the clarity of associated costs might sometimes be lacking.
- Convenient Midtown Location (Positive): Despite the operational challenges, the physical location on W 43rd Street remains a logistical advantage for New Yorkers, offering relatively easy access for pick-up and drop-off compared to airport locations.
- Age-Related Perceptions (Potential Bias): The customer's perception of being "set up" due to their age ("freshly 23") and naive suggests that younger renters should be particularly vigilant in confirming all terms and conditions to avoid feeling exploited or unfairly charged.

For New Yorkers, the decision to rent a car is often a practical one driven by specific needs that public transportation can't fulfill. Avis Car Rental at 515 W 43rd St in Midtown Manhattan offers the convenience of a globally recognized brand in a highly accessible urban location. This central placement is a key advantage for locals, allowing for easier pick-up and drop-off compared to navigating to outer-borough or airport rental counters.
However, the experiences shared by actual customers provide crucial insights into how locals can best navigate renting from this particular branch. While Avis generally offers a wide selection of vehicles, including newer electric options, customers must be diligent. The feedback about unsafe vehicle conditions (tires) and issues with rental agreement accuracy (EV charge, return location, unexpected fees, and E-Toll charges) underscores the absolute necessity for New Yorkers to be proactive.
To make this location suitable for your needs, it is imperative to thoroughly inspect your reserved vehicle upon pickup for safety and cleanliness, carefully review every detail of your rental agreement (especially return location and mileage policies), and proactively ask questions about all potential fees, particularly concerning tolls and electric vehicle charging. While the convenience of location and a broad fleet are clear benefits, a cautious and informed approach is essential to ensure a smooth and budget-friendly experience with Avis Car Rental on W 43rd Street. By being prepared, New Yorkers can still leverage the advantages this central rental spot offers for their diverse travel needs.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Reserved a minivan for a family of 4. Consider us lucky that we are all alive to write a review because we were provided a vehicle that should never have been on the road. All 4 tires were UNSAFE to drive as the belts were visible and shredding. Drove this unknowingly for about 300-400 miles before I noticed with the steering fully locked to one side after i parked. I had a stressful drive, about an hour to Yorkville, NY for an exchange, but they didn't have any exchanges available. Due to the condition of the tires, they would not allow me to drive the van any further so they were willing to give me a van that was already reserved for another customer. Avoid this Manhattan location, they do not value customer lives. See my yelp review, the photos are featured for this location.
Jul 02, 2025 · Nick GomezI had the most unpleasant experience renting a car through this location last month. I have rented from Avis before in South Florida and it was always a great experience. This location gave me an electric vehicle which was NOT charged (about 90miles range on it when I got it). I told the front desk worker that I would need the car only for one day, as I was checking the car out at 12pm and was going to return the car to the Avis location in Manasquan, NJ the following day at 12pm.The following day, I was unable to return the car to the Manasquan Avis FRANCHISE location because they did not accept electric vehicles there AND because the desk worker wrote my rental agreement to have the car be returned to this MANHATTAN location..I called Avis, and my rental agreement was then extended another day, which charged me another day of base rent and fees and charged me another fee to “change the return location” which was incorrectly written in the first place.. at this point I was upset by the situation but just accepted it to be what it is.However, to top it all off, I have a help desk ticket with the E-Toll system because, apparently, I accrued $203 of Tolls on my one way trip through Philadelphia and then to Manasquan. To be quite frank, I feel like I was set up. The front desk worker called the manager at one point to let them know about my age and that I was “freshly 23.”I feel like my naiveté was taken advantage of and thus I was given a car with hardly any range and a rental agreement with the incorrect return location so that I would be forced to keep the car another day and pay more fees. With everything settled, a $220 car rental turned into a $650+ ordeal… read your rental agreement and confirm your pickup and drop off locations, dates, and times before you take the keys from them.
Jul 07, 2025 · Rustin ScarbroughCan’t give this place five stars because they did not have a car available, even though I reserved it weeks ago, but they were very accommodating and were able to arrange a car for me at another Avis location at the agreed original rate. The staff at this location and at the next location were both very professional and accommodating. While the intial experience was not an ideal one, they went up and beyond to help me out.
May 12, 2025 · Christian GarciaMake sure your vehicle is fully refueled 8/8 when pickup, otherwise you‘ll get in trouble otherwise. Location is a little bit dodgy. Car was really dirty on the inside!
Jan 09, 2025 · C A MuellerGood experience. The car was ready and on time and the employees were awesome. We stayed in the city and needed a car to travel to NJ for the day
