Landed at 11pm to find out they had zero cars ALL AFTERNOON!!Not a similar car. Not a downgrade. Nothing!!They charged me nearly $600 to literally have nothing available when we arrived. No heads-up, no apology, just a shrug at the counter after waiting in a lengthy line. My family was stranded at the airport, scrambling for an Uber, and we missed our rafting trip the next day.Avis didn’t just drop the ball—they lit it on fire and walked away. Stop the madness!! Steer clear from Avis!!

I initially had a great rate, but when I went to pick up the car in Asheville, NC, they said none of my credit cards worked on their antiquated equipment for their extra $250 deposit. I used the same card as I did for the fully paid rental. Avis customer service was zero help. Bank stated the problem was with Avis, not with my card. Now I was stuck getting a last minute rental from Enterprise for $350 more than my Avis reservation. Enterprise had no problem with my credit card. I'll never, ever use Avis again. I read some bad reviews, and thought it couldn't be that bad, but it was! During this 2-hour ordeal, I noticed the Enterprise and National window had a constant line of customers where Avis only had 3 including me. That speaks volumes in itself.**UPDATE**After contacting Avis as their response suggested, all they said was they use my review to try and do better. Good grief. Why ask me to contact their customer relations department if no form of resolution is provided? It seems Avis just wants to look like they are concerned by providing an initial response for the public to see.

We were told to stop by any Avis location for assistance. That was a lie. We had to return it to the airport. When we arrived they asked if we topped it off with gas! NO!!!! THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON!!! No we did not bother to stop because we're only trading it in because YOUR vehicle failed. So off we go to get gas to exchange the car. I have now missed my best friends wedding. I was her maid of honor and I flew from Florida to NC for this only to show up at the ceremony. I'll never get this back. Way to go Avis! Update* when we returned the second vehicle the AVIS employee volunteered the information that that first vehicle had been returned from the previous renter via a TOW TRUCK! Someone cleared the check engine light and put it right back out for rental. Im beside myself knowing that we could have had a fatal accident on the mountain if the engine had failed again. Don't book with AVIS unless your willing to risk it all!
May 19, 2025 · Ginger Snap3rd trip with Avis here (June, 2025). Reserved for a full size car, they “upgraded” me to a tiny Buick SUV. The SUV was pretty rough, it had not been cleaned and the antenna was broken off an just thrown inside. On the plus side apparently with my “upgrade” I was provided with a complimentary sock. Either that or it was left from the last rental and , again, they gave me a dirty vehicle. Thanks for another great “upgraded” rental experience.My company contracts with Avis for car rentals and I am a preferred customer of Avis. I arrived at Avis on 09/19/2022 with a reservation made through my company. Prior to arriving at the airport the app told me when I arrived to just pick a car. When I try to use the app I am greeted with a message saying there is an error and I should go to the preferred customer line at the airport. I walk in and see there's only one line and it's very long.After waiting for a while I speak with a clerk who confirms my reservation and then says they don't have any cars. I explain the circumstances of being a corporate customer and they should have one sat aside. Nope, no car for you. They tell me I will have to wait until one is cleaned. Thirty minutes later I am given the keys to a Jeep Compass and it is brought around with all the windows down.I sit in the driver's seat and am immediately overwhelmed with the stench of cigarette smoke and the inside is disgusting. I asked the attendant if someone has been smoking in the car and he just shrugs and says they aren't supposed to. Yeah, I get that and you were supposed to be cleaning the car and apparently that didn't happen either.I head back to the counter and explain the situation. I am given a car that is below the class I rented, but am just so fed up at this point I leave. The kicker is that their lot was full of cars, but either due to laziness or incompetence they weren't renting them.I return the car today and try to check out, but again the app says that isn't possible so I have to go inside. The reason is that they don't have anyone working the actual lot. Same girl took the keys from me. No apology for the lack of professionalism or the lack of cars. Horrible experience.All the other car rental places seemed to be able to service their customers while I was there so I would avoid Avis/Budget if you are renting from Asheville/AVL location.Update on 10/17Again arrive at Avis and they have no cars available. So this is 2 for 2 on not being able to do the one thing they do. Only reason I rent from them is I’m a corporate client and I have to. Choose literally any other company for AVL.
Jun 04, 2025 · Mark WalkerDo not rent at this location under any circumstances. Beyond terrible. They have been having problems getting cars for weeks. Rather than have anyone available to help customers they have screwed over they go home. That’s right you can have a confirmed guaranteed car rental and the lights are off, no one there to give you your keys, no cars and no one even there to check you back in if you are returning. They clearly do not care. Their phone was disconnected when I tried to call and the kind folks at the neighboring rental car company said the manager never comes out to help with customers and will close the window and turn off the lights in customers faces. Should you wish to try and contact the national line they are in South Africa and do not care, can do nothing to help you and will say simply get yourself to a different Avis location that has cars and they will honor your reservation if they can. There is another Avis in Asheville that is under separate ownership and management and they are doing their best to cover, but there is only so much they can do and when they run out of cars you are stranded in the mountains.
