For residents of New Mexico, particularly those in the Albuquerque area, Dollar Car Rental at the Albuquerque International Airport (ABQ) serves as a highly suitable and often convenient option for their vehicle rental needs. Its location directly within the airport's consolidated Car Rental Center is a significant advantage, particularly for those flying in or out of the city. This accessibility means a shorter transfer time from the terminal via the dedicated shuttle service, allowing locals to quickly pick up a car upon return from a trip or easily drop off a vehicle before departure.
The broad selection of vehicles, from economical cars for quick local errands to SUVs capable of handling New Mexico's diverse landscapes for weekend getaways, ensures that most needs can be met. For instance, if you're returning home after a flight and your personal car is unavailable, or if you need a comfortable vehicle to transport visiting family for a tour of Santa Fe or a trip to White Sands, Dollar offers practical solutions.
However, it is crucial for locals to be aware of certain aspects and approach their rental with diligence, especially concerning fuel policies, which have been a source of frustration for some customers. To ensure the most positive and transparent experience:
Understand the Fuel Policy: This is perhaps the most critical point. Dollar, like many rental companies, typically operates on a "Full to Full" fuel policy, meaning you receive the car with a full tank and are expected to return it full. Any missing fuel will be charged at a premium rate, often significantly higher than local gas stations.
Refuel Close to the Airport: If operating on a "Full to Full" policy, always refill the tank at a gas station very close (within 5-10 miles) to the airport before returning the vehicle. This minimizes the risk of the fuel gauge dropping even slightly during the final drive, which can lead to unexpected charges.
KEEP YOUR FUEL RECEIPTS: This cannot be stressed enough. As customer reviews indicate, without a receipt as proof of purchase, disputes over fuel charges become significantly harder to resolve. Take a photo of the gas gauge at the time of refueling and upon drop-off, if possible.
Inspect the Vehicle Thoroughly: Before driving off, do a complete walk-around of the vehicle with a Dollar representative. Document any existing damage, both interior and exterior, no matter how minor. Take photos or videos as timestamped proof to avoid being charged for pre-existing issues.
Clarify Drop-off Procedures: Understand the exact drop-off process, especially for after-hours returns. Knowing if there's staff available to check the vehicle immediately or if you simply leave the keys can help prevent issues, particularly regarding fuel verification.
Review Your Rental Agreement: Carefully read all terms and conditions, including mileage limits (though typically unlimited for leisure rentals), insurance options, and any additional fees. Ask questions if anything is unclear.
By taking these proactive steps and being meticulous, New Mexico residents can leverage the convenience and diverse fleet offered by Dollar Car Rental at Albuquerque International Airport. It remains a viable option for meeting various transportation needs, ensuring a smooth start or end to your journeys within the enchanting landscapes of New Mexico.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I filled the vehicle with gas at a gas station 2.5 miles from the Dollar Rental Car drop-off. I followed the instructions to fill-up near the airport and have receipts available to show that you used a gas station near the airport. I had to do 2 transactions because there was a $75 limit on transactions at the pump. There was no one at the drop-off location and I simply had to leave the vehicle without being able to show the receipts that the vehicle had been filled with gas or verify that the needle was on Full. I received a bill from Dollar Rental Car where I was charged $23.85 for 2 gallons of gas. I know there is no way possible that I consumed 2 gallons of gas by driving 2.5 miles. Will NEVER use them again and advise everyone to do the same. Would give 0 stars, but you have to give at least 1.
Jun 23, 2025 · Carlo Anton FontenotWe got charge $13.72 for "only returned gas tank up to 92%"We filled to car up, 2.7 miles from return area, and there is no way it took 8% of gas that short distance. Dollar couldn't even start a claim, due to no receipt from gas station. We travel approximately 4 weeks a year and rent a car every time. Never had this problem before, never ask for receipt but lessen learned. It is not the dollar amount, it is the principal. We have used same gas station in Albuquerque several times, before we returned the car, and never have had this happened before.
May 27, 2025 · Kina LundgrenWe had a stressful experience with this rental car location. They close at 10 PM, which feels quite early for an airport rental. Our flight was delayed, and we arrived just 5 minutes after closing, only to find the place already completely shut down—no one in sight.Thankfully, a very kind Hertz employee helped us out, or we would’ve been stranded. That moment caused a lot of unnecessary stress and anxiety after a long travel day. That said, once we got the car, everything else went smoothly. The vehicle was in great condition and pick-up was quick and easy—just wish the customer service had been a bit more flexible with airport timing.
Jun 22, 2025 · Kevin LVNI had a great experience with Dollar twice in the same trip as I switched cars midtrip to go up to the mountains more safely on a snowy weekend. I had Brigitte take care of me both times and I felt impressed both times at how flawlessly easy she made the check-in, she was so calming and efficient. I had Gary for both drop-offs and he also made everything easy while going the extra steps to help me transfer luggage to the new car, had a lighthearted helpfulness that I loved. You can teach someone to be a good worker but you can't teach them to be a good human. Two good humans made it a great experience
Mar 14, 2025 · Cheryl HumbleReserved a mini van specifically on April 16th 2024 to pickup on June 1st 2024. Pre paid for it as well. Went to pick up and told they had no mini vans available. I really needed a minivan due to a 5,000 mile road trip with my grandmother who has a harder time getting in and out of vehicles. We also needed easier access to our cooler instead of reaching over the back seats to access drinks and snacks. We also needed the room for additional passengers at specific destinations visiting family. All of this was explained to the representative who did his best to accommodate to my knowledge. I was offered a Volvo XC90 SUV upgrade but told him I really needed the minivan. He said I could check with other companies to see if they have a van. Sixt had a minivan and I was beginning to book there and then got to the point of being told the price and it was double what I paid for a 2 week reservation. I did not see why I should be paying more for dollar rentals poor customer service practices. So I told them I’m not going to pay more than I paid to reserve the other and dollar should cover the additional cost. That wasn’t an option. I did not have time to argue or fight I needed to get home as sleep as I was driving nearly 1,100 miles that night. I told him to tell the dollar rep that I would just take the Volvo. I had asked if it was recently serviced due to such a long road trip and was told it was. Upon entering the vehicle to leave the airport area and returning home to start figuring out the Tetris game to pack it I saw it was not cleaned or detailed at all. I spent at least two hours cleaning up the previous drivers spilt drinks and food along with dog hair everywhere. Another task I should not have had to do as a paying customer who booked well in advance. I also checked information on the vehicle and found out it required premium fuel costing us much more money for the nearly 5,200 miles driven. The second day of the two week trip the maintenance light came on showing it was not recently serviced at all. Within a week the windshield fluid low light came on and I barely used the washer fluid I cleaned the windows every time we stopped for fuel. My grandmother was not able to stretch out the way she would have been able to in a mini van and her ankle and foot swelled from being cramped up in the vehicle. She had to sit out some sightseeing in various areas due to Dollar’s incompetence to have the vehicles back that have been reserved. Overall this is the worst company that I have ever dealt with and very poor business ethics. I have not been offered anything for all the issues this caused and you better believe I will escalate these issues to all the appropriate areas including BBB. I will never do business with this company again and I will make sure none of my friends and family do either.
