For residents of Washington, D.C., Dollar Car Rental at Union Station presents a uniquely convenient option for car rental due to its central and highly accessible location. The ability to rent a car directly from a major transportation hub without needing to travel to a distant airport is a significant advantage, saving time and simplifying logistics for both planned trips and last-minute needs. However, it is critically important for prospective local renters to be fully aware of the highly concerning customer feedback provided for this specific location. The reviews paint a picture of significant operational and customer service challenges, including:
- System Downtime and Lack of Solutions: A customer reported that despite a reservation made a month in advance, they were told the "system had been down for a week and there was nothing they could do- no refund, no alternative." This indicates potential reliability issues and a lack of proactive problem-solving.
- Poor Customer Service and Unhelpful Staff: Multiple reviews describe the staff as "not helpful at all," "rude, nasty, and unhelpful." One customer explicitly stated, "Avoid at all costs unless you want problems."
- Overbooking and Forced Upgrades: A major issue highlighted was Dollar overbooking vehicles, forcing a reserved car to be "upgraded at a $20 charge," with the manager unhelpful in resolving the situation. This can lead to unexpected costs and frustration.
While the location's convenience is undeniable, these severe and consistent negative reviews regarding fundamental aspects of rental service (vehicle availability, billing accuracy, and staff professionalism) suggest that local users should exercise extreme caution when considering this Dollar Car Rental branch.
If choosing to rent from this location, it is highly advisable for D.C. locals to:
- Call Ahead: Always confirm your reservation and vehicle availability, especially if you have specific car class requirements.
- Document Everything: Keep all reservation confirmations, take photos of the vehicle at pick-up (inside and out) and drop-off, and meticulously check your final bill for any unexpected charges.
- Be Prepared for Challenges: Go in with the expectation that you might encounter issues and be ready to advocate for yourself or seek resolution through Dollar's main customer service line if the local branch is unhelpful.
While the Union Station location offers a convenient access point, the recurring themes of poor service and operational issues in customer reviews suggest that for a smooth and stress-free experience, local residents might want to explore alternatives or proceed with a high degree of vigilance at this particular Dollar Car Rental branch.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I reserved the car over a month ago. When I showed up, I was told the system had been down for a week and there was nothing they could do- no refund, no alternative. Apr 13, 2025 · Daviel EscallonThe entire staff needs to be fired. They are rude, nasty, and unhelpful. Dollar overbooked the car that I had reserved, and I was forced to upgrade at a $20 charge. The manager was not helpful in resolving the situation. Do not book from this location. If they get no business, then they will eventually have to close!
Dec 16, 2024 · Mimi MimiRecently rented a car and reserved 2 car seats for my small children a month prior to pickup. I am also visibly 9 months pregnant. Was told these were "not in the system" upon arrival to pick up the car, and they could only supply me one. I shared my reservation confirmation for the two seats and was told "thats not our problem." I asked for the woman's name at the counter and she said "I'm not going to tell you." I asked for another person's name working there and they also denied me this. She told me if I wanted to "wait around" for a manager, I could but it would be a while. When I attemped to photograph her so I could give the company direct feedback about the service of their employees, I was yelled at and threatened with cancellation of my rental unless I deleted the photo. I then overheard her discussing in spanish with a colleague putting extra charges on my account, was asked for my card and only once I went over the charges in detail, was it determined I was being overcharged and those were removed. Could not believe how poorly this went.
Dec 10, 2024 · Montana AlexanderCouldn’t have had a more negative experience with this location. I tried to call in advance to make sure they had a car—no one picked up the phone after multiple tries. When I arrive, of course, I’m told there’s no car available. I ask if they can route one from a different location; I’m told no, and instead, I’m given the corporate line and told just to call them. So I call the corporate line and—shocker—no one picks up. After sitting on hold for 30 mins, I gave up. Do yourself a favor and avoid booking here. What you’re signing up for is an empty promise and an endless menu of automated phone options with no one on the other side to help.
