Hello, fellow Minnesotans! Navigating car rental options at Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport (MSP) can be a crucial part of our travel plans, whether we're flying in from afar or simply need a temporary vehicle for local use. While many national and international car rental brands operate in and around MSP, it's essential to understand the unique experiences and potential challenges that can arise with different providers. Today, we're focusing on Dollar Car Rental, specifically their operation located at 4300 Humphrey Dr in Minneapolis, near MSP Airport.
Dollar Car Rental is a well-known name in the industry, often associated with budget-friendly options. However, as with any service, individual experiences can vary, and it's particularly important for local users in Minnesota to be aware of common feedback and potential pitfalls. This article aims to provide a clear, engaging, and informative overview of what to expect when considering Dollar Car Rental at this location. We'll delve into their general operations, location and accessibility, services offered, and crucial features or highlights (both positive and negative) drawn directly from customer reviews. Our goal is to equip you with the knowledge to make an informed decision for your next car rental need in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, ensuring you can anticipate challenges and hopefully avoid any unpleasant surprises.
The desire for a straightforward and affordable car rental experience is universal. However, when issues arise, such as unexpected costs or a lack of vehicle availability, it can significantly impact travel plans and overall satisfaction. Understanding these possibilities upfront can help you prepare and consider alternatives if necessary.
The Dollar Car Rental location we are examining is situated at 4300 Humphrey Dr, Minneapolis, MN 55450, USA. This address places it directly within the operational vicinity of Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport (MSP). For travelers arriving at MSP, Dollar, like many major rental companies, operates its counters and vehicle pick-up/drop-off services at the airport's consolidated rental car facility.
Specifically for MSP, if you arrive at Terminal 1 (Lindbergh), you would typically follow signs for Ground Transportation and the Rental Car Tram, which takes you to the consolidated facility where Dollar and other major agencies have their counters. If you arrive at Terminal 2 (Humphrey), which is generally where Dollar's listed address on Humphrey Drive is most relevant, you would proceed to the Ground Transportation Center located directly across from the terminal building. The rental counters for Dollar and other brands are found within this center, on the ground level of the Purple Ramp.
This on-airport location is designed for convenience, aiming to provide a seamless transition from your flight to your rental car without the need for off-site shuttles. However, "on-airport" doesn't always guarantee a quick process, as customer reviews indicate challenges that can arise at the counter, even when physically present at the airport's rental hub. For locals, driving directly to this location is straightforward, as Humphrey Drive is well-connected to major airport access roads, making it accessible from various parts of the Twin Cities metro area.
Dollar Car Rental, as a national brand, typically offers a standard range of services common within the car rental industry:
- Diverse Vehicle Selection: Dollar generally provides a variety of vehicle classes, including economy cars (e.g., Chevrolet Spark, Hyundai Accent) for budget-conscious travelers, compact and mid-size sedans (e.g., Nissan Versa Note, Chevrolet Malibu, Toyota Corolla) for daily driving, and SUVs (e.g., Hyundai Santa Fe, Nissan Rogue, Chevrolet Traverse) for more space or Minnesota's varied driving conditions. They also offer minivans (e.g., Chrysler Pacifica) and some specialty vehicles like convertibles or larger vans, though availability varies.
- Short and Long-Term Rentals: You can typically rent a vehicle for daily, weekly, or longer-term periods, accommodating various travel needs and durations.
- On-Airport Convenience: As an on-airport provider at MSP, Dollar allows for direct pick-up and drop-off at the airport's rental car facility (located at 4300 Humphrey Dr for Terminal 2, and accessible via tram from Terminal 1).
- Optional Add-ons: Customers can usually add extra features such as GPS navigation, child safety seats, and roadside assistance.
- Insurance and Protection Products: Dollar offers various optional protection plans, including Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) and Personal Effects Coverage (PEC), which can reduce or waive financial responsibility for damage or theft of the rental vehicle and personal belongings.
- Fuel Options: They provide choices for refueling the vehicle, such as prepaying for fuel at a set rate, allowing Dollar to refuel (often at a higher per-gallon service charge), or returning the car with a full tank yourself.
- Payment Methods & Deposits: Dollar generally accepts major credit cards for reservations and deposits. Debit card usage for qualification may come with stricter requirements, including proof of return travel tickets and additional forms of identification, often with a significant security deposit hold (e.g., $500). Credit card holds typically cover the estimated rental cost plus an additional amount (e.g., up to $200).
Based on direct customer feedback, the Dollar Car Rental location near MSP Airport has some significant features and highlights that potential renters in Minnesota should be aware of, some of which present challenges:
- Significant Discrepancies in Quoted vs. Actual Rates: A major concern highlighted by a customer is the "Horrible rates" and "unrealistic deposits" encountered at the counter, drastically different from the "supposed to be $150 for the weekend" confirmation from a booking site like Priceline. The customer was quoted "over $800 after everything," leading them to rent elsewhere. This points to potential issues with transparency in pricing and additional fees/deposits that may not be clearly communicated during the booking process through third-party sites. Standard industry practice involves security deposits (often $100-$1000) and additional charges for insurance, fuel, and optional extras, but such a dramatic increase raises flags.
- Car Availability Issues and Long Wait Times: Another critical highlight is the frequent problem of vehicle unavailability, even for pre-reserved cars. One customer stated, "Reserved car 3 months ago. Came here and they did not have a car ready. Stated we had to wait a few more hours. There were probably 50 people in front of us and others who had waited 3 hours already. How do you not have a single car ready?" This indicates significant operational challenges that lead to extensive delays and frustration for customers who have confirmed reservations. General reviews for Dollar at MSP also mention "Long wait time to pick up car - understaffed at check-in reception, and wait time to obtain car" and being "ALWAYS out of cars."
- Potential for Unclean or Older Vehicles: While not universally stated, some generalized reviews for Dollar at MSP mention issues like cars smelling of smoke, having confusing fuel gauges, being "high mileage, dirty and dinged up," or having "transmission problems," suggesting inconsistency in fleet quality and maintenance at times.
- Customer Service Challenges: Reviews sometimes describe "Terrible customer service" and staff who "tried to sneak in basic coverage in my rental." This indicates that while some customers may have good interactions, others face challenges with transparency and helpfulness from the staff.
To contact Dollar Car Rental at their Minneapolis location near MSP Airport, here is the provided information:
Address: 4300 Humphrey Dr, Minneapolis, MN 55450, USA
Phone: (866) 434-2226 (This appears to be a general reservation or customer service line for Dollar)
Mobile Phone: +1 866-434-2226
While these numbers are provided, for direct contact with the MSP location, it might be beneficial to search for a local branch number if the general line proves unhelpful for specific airport-related issues. Typical hours for Dollar at MSP are generally extensive to accommodate airport traffic, often from early morning (e.g., 6:00 AM) to late evening (e.g., 1:00 AM), seven days a week, but it is always wise to confirm current operating hours with the company directly, especially if you have a late arrival or early departure.
For Minnesotans considering Dollar Car Rental at their MSP Airport location (4300 Humphrey Dr, Minneapolis), it's crucial to approach with caution and thorough preparation. While the convenience of an on-airport location is appealing, the consistent customer feedback regarding significant discrepancies in quoted versus actual rates, along with frequent issues of cars not being ready and exceptionally long wait times, presents substantial risks to a smooth rental experience. The reviews suggest that what might appear to be a cost-effective option online can quickly escalate into a frustrating and expensive ordeal at the counter.
For locals, this means that while Dollar might sometimes offer attractive initial rates, the potential for unexpected deposits and the very real chance of experiencing prolonged delays or even not receiving a reserved vehicle, could severely disrupt travel plans. In a competitive market like MSP, where alternatives like National, as mentioned in a review, might offer clearer pricing and better availability, it becomes critical to weigh the initial perceived savings against the potential for significant inconvenience and financial surprises. Therefore, while Dollar is geographically suitable for MSP travelers, its operational challenges, as highlighted by numerous customers, make it a less predictable choice for Minnesotans seeking a reliable and hassle-free car rental experience. Always confirm all fees, understand deposit policies, and have a backup plan when considering this particular agency.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Horrible rates. unrealistic deposits. I was blind sided when I arrived from Washington. Car was supposed to be $150 for the weekend. That is what my confirmation email from Priceline told me. But at the counter They wanted me to pay over $800 after everything. So I walked across the hall to National and they put me in a nice brand new mustang for 4days for only $300. National is the way to go
Jan 10, 2024 · Donald CornwellReserved car 3 months ago. Came here and they did not have a car ready. Stated we had to wait a few more hours. There were probably 50 people in front of us and others who had waited 3 hours already. How do you not have a single car ready? Will never use them again.
May 26, 2023 · David VangI rented a vehicle using T-Mobile to take advantage of the drop off fuel benefit. I verified that it was on there. 2 days prior to picking up I called and they said it was there. At pick-up, not only was their singular desk employee glacially slow, he snuck in the basic coverage, doubling the price of my rental. When I dropped the car off, they fully charged me for fuel despite the T-Mobile perk being on the plan. I wouldn't trust Dollar or their affiliates if I were you. 2-stars for visibility since a lot of companies ignore 1-star reviews.
Jun 10, 2024 · Brendan BalkoIf I could leave NO stars I would. Rent from any other car rental place instead of Dollar.Dollar continues to charge my credit card for random fees, charges they continue add. I rented a car back in May, it is now September and dollar has continued to charge my credit card. I have contacted them REPEATEDLY to dispute charges and they refuse to reimburse my card. I will never rent a car from this terrible company ever again, and I will be sure to inform everyone I know of the same. Rent from here if you want your credit card to be charged repeatedly months after your rental for fees that make no sense! HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE, some of the worse customer service I have ever experienced honestly.
Sep 11, 2022 · Cristina JorgensonAwful experience. Company will slap all kinds of charges on after the fact for additional coverages and gas despite returning the vehicle full. Charges of which you never agreed to after asking for clarity. Customer service won’t help at all and seems quite obvious they have no desire to retain customers or correct their own mistakes. Won’t be using this company again.
