Economy Rent A Car Introduce
For Californians, especially those in the bustling San Diego area, securing a car rental can be a frequent necessity – whether for a crucial business trip, an unexpected vehicle repair, or simply exploring our beautiful state. When searching for options, "Economy Rent A Car" might catch your eye with promises of low rates. However, like with many services that seem too good to be true, it’s vital to delve deeper into what a local user can truly expect from their experience. This article provides an honest and detailed overview of Economy Rent A Car at its San Diego location on India Street, drawing directly from recent customer experiences to offer a factual perspective.
Economy Rent A Car positions itself as a provider of affordable rental solutions, aiming to cater to budget-conscious travelers and locals. While the idea of a low-cost rental is appealing, the reality, as articulated by past customers, highlights significant inconsistencies in service, communication, and overall transparency. Our goal here is to equip you, as a local San Diegan, with comprehensive insights into this particular branch, covering everything from its actual location and accessibility to the nuances of its services and the critical feedback from real-world experiences. This will help you make a truly informed decision for your next car rental in California.
Economy Rent A Car is located at 2367 India St, San Diego, CA 92101, USA. It's crucial for renters to understand from the outset that this location is *not* at the San Diego International Airport (SAN) terminal, despite its name potentially implying an airport presence through third-party booking sites. This is a common point of confusion and frustration for customers, especially those arriving by air. The branch is situated off-site, requiring transportation to reach it.
For those flying into San Diego, Economy Rent A Car does offer a shuttle service. Customers typically need to take the airport's consolidated "Car Rental Center Bus" to the main Rental Car Center. From there, it's often necessary to call the Economy Rent A Car office for a specific shuttle pickup. This process can be inconsistent and lead to long wait times, particularly if shuttle availability is infrequent. The address on India Street places it in a busy urban area, not directly adjacent to the airport, which can impact parking convenience for personal vehicles if you're a local driving to pick up a rental. For residents, accessing the India Street location generally requires a short drive or ride-share, as it's part of the bustling Little Italy neighborhood.
Economy Rent A Car generally offers a range of standard rental services, although the quality and execution of these services appear to vary significantly based on customer feedback. You can typically expect:
- Variety of Vehicle Classes: They aim to provide various vehicle types, including economy, compact, intermediate (like a Toyota Camry or Volkswagen), standard, SUVs (such as a Nissan Rogue or Jeep Patriot), minivans (like a Kia Sedona), and potentially luxury cars.
- Online Booking: Reservations can be made through their website or third-party platforms like Kayak, Expedia, and Travelocity.
- Debit Card Acceptance: They accept debit cards for rentals, typically with a return flight ticket and a security deposit (around $300-$5000 depending on car type).
- Additional Drivers: An additional driver fee of $10 USD per day for unrelated individuals with different last names, with conditions for related parties.
- Age Restrictions: Minimum rental age is 18, with daily surcharges (e.g., $25.00/day) for drivers aged 18-24.
- Optional Extras: Products such as GPS, child safety seats (baby seats, booster seats), and Emergency Roadside Assistance (ERA) are available for an additional daily fee. ERA covers services like key retrieval, jump starts, and fuel delivery.
- Cancellation Policy: Reservations typically require cancellation at least 48 hours prior to pickup to avoid a charge (e.g., $50 USD or one day's rental).
The customer reviews paint a vivid picture of the "features" and "highlights" (or lack thereof) at Economy Rent A Car:
- Promised Low Rates: The initial "offer that I just couldn’t refuse" (e.g., $80 for three days for a full-size car) can be a strong draw.
- Actual Cost Discrepancies: A major highlight of negative reviews is the "bait and switch" tactic, where the quoted price significantly increases upon arrival (e.g., $80 becoming $180), or mandatory insurance purchases doubling the rental price. This is a critical point of frustration for many customers.
- Off-Airport Location & Shuttle Issues: The fact that it's "not at the San Diego Airport" and that shuttles are "infrequent" or unclear in communication is a major inconvenience, especially for those with flight schedules. This leads to "scrambling" and potential missed flights.
- Poor Customer Service: Consistently described as "not friendly," "rude and dismissive." Customers report a "lack of empathy or willingness to assist," particularly for those who have prepaid. This is a severe recurring complaint, with staff exhibiting "unprofessional demeanor."
- Vehicle Condition Concerns: Cars are reported to have "minor scratches" upon pickup, requiring customers to meticulously photograph for their protection. One reviewer explicitly stated receiving a car that was "dirty on the outside and full of scratches nicks and dents" and was "not cleaned before being handed over with food under the seats and left behind belongings."
- Lack of Amenities: The waiting area is described as severely lacking, with "no basic amenities such as water, a bathroom, or even a chair to sit on," indicating a disregard for customer comfort during potentially long waits.
- Car Availability Issues: Even with a reservation, the reserved car might "not even be available at the time of my arrival," leading to prolonged waits as customers observe other vehicles being returned and washed.
- Confusing After-Hours Return Policy: Staff reportedly do "not explain properly" after-hours drop-off procedures. Customers have been told to "park it outside if there is any room and drop off the keys in the night box," leading to issues like "no parking" and struggling to find a spot, particularly on Sundays when the office is not open 24 hours. There's also a paid option to drop off at Aladdin Airport Parking, but this often comes as a surprise.
- Surprise Fees: Beyond the initial price hike, customers report "many surprise fees" being added to their bill.

For San Diego locals, the prospect of an "Economy Rent A Car" with a seemingly irresistible offer can be tempting, especially when seeking a budget-friendly option for a last-minute need. The initial promise of a low rate might draw you in, and for some, the concept of a non-airport location could seem appealing to avoid the typical airport crowds. Theoretically, if all aspects of the rental proceeded flawlessly and exactly as initially quoted, a local might find value here.
However, based on the overwhelming and consistent feedback from numerous local customers, it is paramount for Californians to exercise extreme caution and fully understand the significant risks associated with choosing Economy Rent A Car on India Street. The "awful experience" described by multiple reviewers paints a stark picture: prices dramatically increasing upon arrival, a notable absence of basic amenities (no water, no bathroom, no chairs in the waiting area), and profoundly "unprofessional demeanor" from front desk staff. The issues extend to receiving unclean cars, significant confusion and lack of support regarding off-hours returns, and inconsistent communication about shuttle services from the airport, leaving travelers "scrambling."
Therefore, this car rental location is arguably *not* suitable for most locals seeking a reliable, transparent, and stress-free experience. While the initial low quote might be attractive, the actual cost and the potential for a "frustrating and exhausting" encounter, compounded by what is described as a "distinct lack of empathy or willingness to assist," far outweigh any perceived savings. For San Diegans who value clear communication, predictable pricing, clean vehicles, and basic customer service, it would be prudent to explore other car rental options that prioritize customer comfort and satisfaction. The phrase "you get what I paid for it, which wasn’t a lot" from a past customer, unfortunately, seems to sum up a prevalent sentiment, making it a choice that most locals should "think twice before choosing."

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I picked this place because they made me an offer that I just couldn’t refuse. A random full-size car they said a Camry three days for 80 $80. Once I arrived there I picked up the car and the $80 became $180. I did not get the Camry. I got a Volkswagen car. It already had some minor scratches I had to make sure I took pictures of it from all protection. They never told me that they were not open 24 hours so the day before returning the car I called them and they said that I will have to drop it off somewhere else and different location. First of all, I did not know that this location was up site from the airport to make a long story short they said you could bring it back to the original rental place and if you can park it outside if there is any room and drop off the keys in the night box. When I arrive the next morning at five in the morning. There was absolutely no parking. I had to wait till somebody moved in the street so I can park the Customer Service. It is not friendly and do not explain properly the way you should, but I guess I get what I paid for it, which wasn’t a lot. I will never use them again.
Jun 05, 2025 · Juan HernandezAwful ExperienceI recently had a truly disappointing experience with Economy Rent A Car located at 2367 India Dr, San Diego, and I feel compelled to share my experience to help others avoid the frustrations I encountered.Firstly, it’s crucial to clarify that this location is not at the San Diego Airport, contrary to what many might assume. The lack of clear communication regarding shuttle availability is alarming. If you have a flight to catch, plan accordingly, as shuttles are infrequent, and you may find yourself scrambling to make your schedule work.Upon arrival, I was met with what I can only describe as some of the most discouraging customer service I have ever experienced. The woman at the front desk, a Latin lady whose name I regrettably did not catch, exhibited an unprofessional demeanor that was both rude and dismissive. Her attitude towards customers was appalling, particularly towards those of us who had prepaid for our rentals. It seemed as though there was a distinct lack of empathy or willingness to assist, especially when questions were posed. This attitude raises concerns about the company's commitment to customer satisfaction, particularly for those who feel trapped by their prepaid status. The waiting area was another significant letdown. There were no basic amenities such as water, a bathroom, or even a chair to sit on while waiting for your vehicle. The sheer lack of consideration for customers' comfort is astonishing. In fact, I found myself waiting for a considerable amount of time, as the car I had reserved was not even available at the time of my arrival. Instead, I watched as other customers returned their vehicles, only to see their cars washed right in front of me, further prolonging my wait.If you plan to return your vehicle on a Sunday, be prepared for yet another surprise. The staff informed me that I would have to park the car on the street and drop the keys in a box, with no assistance or guidance on how to navigate that process. This lack of support is particularly concerning for those unfamiliar with the area, and I found myself struggling to find a parking spot, which is no small feat in San Diego. All in all, my experience with Economy Rent A Car was frustrating and exhausting. The service was subpar, the accommodations nonexistent, and the overall experience was far from what one would expect from a car rental company. I strongly urge potential customers to think twice before choosing this company for their rental needs. There are many other options available that prioritize customer service and comfort. Don’t let the promise of a low rate lure you into a frustrating experience.
Jan 29, 2025 · D FDO NOT RENT A CAR FROM HERE!!! They practice bait and switch sales tactics. What was supposed to be a $120 rental turned into a $370 rental. I had no choice but to pay it because I needed the car and didn't have time to find a car elsewhere. Also, I waited in line for almost 45 minutes because there was only 1 person working the counter, and when I finally was helped, they didn't have the full size car I reserved and tried to offer me an economy car. I had to wait another 30 minutes for a full size car to be ready. After leaving, I checked my receipt and it had a completely different car and mileage listed than what they gave me. After turning the car back in, I received several emails and texts saying I received a toll violation in an area I was never in, demanding me to pay another $100. Poorly run business by scammers. Why give your money to a company who intentionally tries to trick you?? as evidenced by the 900+ bad reviews from other people. Save yourself the hassle and go with another company.
Jul 07, 2025 · Travis MinnichIf I could give zero stars I would. First, when I arrived I called the number as instructed to get the shuttle from the airport. The guy on the phone told me it would be a 10 to 15 minute wait, which was no big deal. Almost 1 hour later, the driver finally showed up. When I got there the girl behind the counter was very rude.Even more frustrating, they do not disclose up front that in order to prove you have auto insurance that covers rentals, you need to show them your declaration page and once you do that they might still reject it and won't let you rent a car without paying at least their liability insurance which is 2 times more expensive than the others. I immediately canceled and caught an uber to the rental car facilities near the airport. The other place didn't ask for my declaration page, allowed me to decline their insurance and use my own and if I had to buy their insurance it would have been 10/day instead of 30/day like Economy Rental. They are in the business of ripping people off. Economy is laughable. I saved 300 going with someone else.
Jun 23, 2025 · Jessie GarritanoSome of these reviews and the fact that they aren't right at the airport had me so worried about this place. But upon calling they tell you where to wait, send you an Uber and give you the details of the Uber driver.I didn't have any hidden fees or weird stuff people are talking about. Everyone was friendly and helpful.I dropped it off and they take you back in a van right to where you need to be at the airport.I'd definitely use them again as it was way cheaper than any other car I've ever rented. I only needed to get around in a normal basic car and that's what I got, so it worked out great for my needs.
