Hertz Car Rental, a globally recognized name in vehicle rentals, has a branch conveniently located at 350 O'Farrell Street in San Francisco. This article aims to provide a comprehensive and factual overview of this specific Hertz location, helping local users in California understand its offerings, accessibility, and what to keep in mind for a smooth rental experience.
San Francisco itself is a vibrant city, but the true spirit of California often lies in the journeys taken beyond its urban core. Whether it's a scenic drive down Highway 1, a wine-tasting tour in Napa Valley, or an adventurous trip to Yosemite National Park, a personal vehicle offers unmatched flexibility. Hertz aims to cater to these diverse travel needs, providing a range of vehicles for both short city excursions and longer road trips across the Golden State.
The Hertz Car Rental - O'farrell Hle branch is strategically located at 350 O'Farrell St, San Francisco, CA 94102, USA. This address places it firmly within the energetic Union Square district, a prime central location in downtown San Francisco. Being situated in such a high-traffic, accessible area makes it a convenient pick-up and drop-off point for a wide range of customers, including local residents, business travelers, and tourists.
The Union Square area is well-served by San Francisco's comprehensive public transportation network, including various Muni bus lines and cable car routes. It is also within a reasonable distance of BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) stations, facilitating easy access from different parts of the Bay Area. This downtown presence means you won't need to travel to an airport or an isolated industrial area to collect your rental car, saving valuable time and effort. From O'Farrell Street, major city arteries connect relatively smoothly to freeways, allowing for quicker departures out of the city and onto your California adventure. The branch typically operates from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM on weekdays and 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM on weekends, providing consistent hours for pickup and return.
Hertz generally offers a comprehensive suite of services to cater to various customer needs, typically including:
- Extensive Vehicle Fleet: Hertz provides a wide array of vehicle classes, including economy, compact, mid-size, and full-size sedans (such as the Chevrolet Malibu, Mazda 3, Nissan Altima), various sizes of SUVs (e.g., Chevrolet Equinox, Nissan Rogue, Toyota Rav4, Chevrolet Suburban), minivans (e.g., Chrysler Pacifica), luxury vehicles (e.g., Genesis G70, Maserati Grecale), and specialty vehicles like convertibles (e.g., Ford Mustang Convertible) and electric vehicles (EVs) such as the Polestar 2.
- Online and Mobile Booking: Customers can reserve vehicles in advance through the Hertz website or their mobile app, allowing for efficient planning and potentially better rates. The "online check-in" feature further streamlines the pick-up process.
- Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Program: This loyalty program offers benefits such as skipping the counter, choosing your vehicle from select options, earning points for free rental days, and often includes exclusive offers and expedited service.
- Flexible Rental Durations: Options are available for daily, weekly, and longer-term monthly rentals, accommodating both short trips and extended needs.
- Optional Protection Products: Hertz offers various insurance and protection plans, including Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) and Premium Emergency Roadside Service (PERS). LDW covers loss or damage to the rental car, while PERS covers non-mechanical issues like lost keys, flat tires, or running out of fuel/EV range. It's crucial for renters to understand these coverages.
- Additional Equipment: Renters can typically add useful accessories like GPS navigation systems, child safety seats (infant, child, and booster), and SiriusXM® satellite radio.
- Fuel Purchase Options: Hertz provides different fuel policies, allowing customers to choose between returning the car with a full tank, purchasing a full tank upfront, or letting Hertz refuel at a per-gallon charge.
- One-Way Rentals: For travelers planning to pick up in San Francisco and drop off at a different location within California or another state, one-way rental services are generally available.
- Roadside Assistance: Basic roadside assistance is included with every rental for mechanical issues. Premium Emergency Roadside Service (PERS) offers extended coverage for other common incidents.
- Prime Downtown San Francisco Location: Its placement on O'Farrell Street provides exceptional convenience and accessibility for individuals located in the city center.
- Diverse Fleet for Varied Needs: Hertz maintains a wide selection of vehicles, from economical options suitable for urban driving to larger SUVs for family trips and electric vehicles for eco-conscious travel, offering a "Manager's Special" for flexible choices.
- Loyalty Program Benefits: The Hertz Gold Plus Rewards program can significantly enhance the rental experience for frequent users by offering expedited service and other perks.
- Electric Vehicle Offerings: Hertz's inclusion of EVs like the Polestar 2 in its fleet caters to the growing demand for sustainable transportation options, though renters should be fully prepared for EV charging logistics.

For Californians, particularly those residing in or frequently visiting San Francisco, Hertz Car Rental at 350 O'Farrell Street offers a strategically located option for accessing a rental vehicle. In a city where personal car ownership can be a logistical challenge due to parking and traffic, a centrally located rental branch provides significant convenience. Locals can easily access this downtown hub via public transportation or a short ride-share, streamlining the process of acquiring a vehicle for various needs. This accessibility is crucial for weekend getaways, family visits, business trips, or simply when a personal vehicle is temporarily unavailable.
However, it is vital for local users to be fully informed and proactive when renting from this specific location, given the nature of the customer reviews provided. The feedback highlights serious concerns regarding vehicle cleanliness, availability (especially for reserved vehicles), and potentially misleading information about roadside assistance and EV charging. While Hertz, as a brand, strives to offer a broad range of vehicles, including popular electric models like the Polestar 2, the customer experiences at this specific branch suggest a need for heightened vigilance.
For a smoother experience, locals considering this Hertz location should:
- Confirm Vehicle Condition: Thoroughly inspect the vehicle upon pickup for cleanliness and any damage, no matter the car class. Do not hesitate to request a different vehicle if the cleanliness or condition is unsatisfactory.
- Understand EV Logistics: If renting an electric vehicle, ensure you are fully aware of charging procedures, compatible charging networks, and potential range limitations. Inquire about charging cables, adapters, and local charging station availability. The reported issues with Polestar 2 charging warrant particular attention.
- Clarify All Costs and Coverage: Pay close attention during the signing process, especially regarding insurance and roadside assistance. Ask direct questions to clarify what is included in your booking versus what is an additional, optional charge. Keep records of these conversations if possible. Hertz offers both basic and premium roadside assistance, so confirm which you have and its scope.
- Communicate Effectively: If any issues arise during your rental (e.g., late return, mechanical problems), communicate proactively with Hertz's central customer service, but also understand that local branch interactions can vary significantly. Keep records of all calls and their outcomes.
- Allocate Extra Time: Be prepared for potential delays during pickup and drop-off, particularly during busy periods, as staffing levels can impact wait times.
While the central San Francisco location and the variety of car classes are attractive, successful rentals at this Hertz branch appear to hinge on diligent customer awareness and proactive management of potential issues. For locals who are well-prepared and willing to meticulously confirm details, it can still serve as a convenient point for accessing transportation for their California adventures.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Here is my experience:• Arrive on time for reservation and the office smells like kebab shop.• Asked about the car and the lady told me my what wasn't cleaned yet, so I asked how long I would wait. She goes inside to ask her manager(mouth full of kebab) and he says 1 hour.• Whatever no biggies just walk around SF spent hour and returned to office and told me my car was cleaned and ready.• Walked down to garage and got in car to see puke, white stains ( I hope it is not I'm thinking about), garbage and weird smell. FYI this is a Premium Car lol!• Get pissed of wife calms me down and positively we try our best to clean the car because I don't want to deal with the office and kebab master manager.• On 101 realizing that battery is draining quickly and there's an issue with wheel alignment.• With this crazy amount of price and issues with car regretting my decision renting this car and from their office I decided to return on next week.Advice = Don't rent through this office. I already sent this to their higher ups because this is not acceptable.
Jan 29, 2025 · Burak Efecan CarucciMy Recommendation use your own car. Avoid their Polestar 2.I Rented this vehicle June 9th 2025, on June 12th 2025 I started my shift at 8am, I went for a charge at 10am in Castro valley CA, from 30% to 75%. I drove in San Francisco from 12pm-7pm.After arriving to a charging location in SF around 7pm the charging station kept giving me an error, I called the 1800# of EVGO, they rebooted the station I spent an hour with them only for them to recommend me another station. I went to 5 different stations. They all gave me an error. I had 65miles left, I drove home & it took off 35 miles from the meter (even though it was a 20 mile drive on cruise control with no traffic). I turned the car off upon arriving home, next morning battery depleted overnight.Defective car but I was held responsible I had to pay $200 to a tow company from Hertz. The other problem I have is the information given to you when you're signing up.I have the conversation recorded and she only talks about what the $11/day covers which the conversation was only focused on insurance cost.Their representative was nice but she only mentioned insurance not roadside assistance. Lack of information put me in this situation. The 2nd rep didn't know anything because she had just started working there. The insurance that I have with Lyft covers an insurance with a deductible of $1000. In case I get into an accident.Hertz insurance requires $11/day. But it includes roadside which again wasn't mentioned in the beginning.Their reviews are horrible, their landline number isn't up to date, I had to call their retail neighbors to figure out the phone number, the manager or whoever's business this is, isn't taking any of it seriously. The day I arrived there, no one was at the front desk keys were laying out in the open for anyone to snatch them up. I waited nearly half an hour before someone checked up on us.Note: Polestar 2 has a common issue that they don't tell you IT WON'T CHARGE. It gives you an error Everytime you try to plug it in it won't charge. If the battery depleted it'll require a tow. If you're stranded that's on you. There's no guarantee they'll swap it for another vehicle.AAA has roadside assistance $130/year 4 tows a year. VS $11/day=$4000+ / year.
Jun 13, 2025 · Gregory BossThe contact number provided for this branch is consistently unreachable. I'm not sure why they've listed a number that doesn't even seem to accept calls.Overall, it was a very frustrating experience.
Jul 15, 2025 · AB NKRenting one of their vehicles should be a last resort. But I promise, if you get to know the staff, they are willing to work with you. If you give them any sort of attitude, you can forget it.Is it an ungodly amount to rent? Yes, if you decide to go into a contract with them, I suggest you work as much as humanly possible to save money and buy another car. It's not worth the money unless you have no other options.Without this car, I would lose everything. If you are going to pay the $500, you might as well get whatever you can out of it, don't bother wasting time at the club or hanging out with friends, work as many hours a day as you can and get out of the contract. I am in it long term because it helps me commute for my job. I just pay the difference until I get another car.If you CAN'T pay the money, DON’T do it. Otherwise, bite the bullet for the short term and ensure you meet the minimum requirements every week.
Nov 08, 2024 · NobodyI recently had an unfortunate experience with Hertz, and I feel compelled to share my disappointment. As someone who values good customer service and reliable services, my experience with Hertz fell far short of expectations. This was disappointing, especially since I had chosen Hertz expecting high standardsI rent a car through Lyft program, every week the system renew the contract and if the car need service you have to fix it by your self even though they pay for it the only thing they give you is voucher paper. It’s really hard to get quick auto inspection and service. With the time frame till you fix your car their system hold your account and they need you to return their car ASAP. Most of time when you try to renew the contract on person on their office they said our system is down come back tomorrow and after couple days they charge you for overdue. This is the worst ever company in United state. I wish Lyft work in collaborate with other Better company like enterprise.
