Hello, Delawareans! When it comes to needing a car rental in our state, especially in a bustling hub like Wilmington, expectations are high for efficiency, vehicle quality, and seamless service. For many, a well-known name like National Car Rental brings with it a certain level of anticipated professionalism. Today, we're taking an in-depth look at the National Car Rental branch located at 100 French St Unit 115A in Wilmington, DE. This article aims to provide a factual, engaging, and informative overview from the perspective of local users in Delaware, shedding light on what to expect when choosing this particular location for your transportation needs.
Car rental services play a crucial role for residents in Delaware, whether it's for business travel, personal emergencies, or leisure trips. A convenient location and reliable service are often top priorities. While National Car Rental has a global presence and a reputation for catering to frequent business travelers through programs like the Emerald Club, the day-to-day experience at individual branches can vary. We'll explore the services offered at this Wilmington location and, importantly, share insights from customer feedback to help you navigate your next rental decision in Delaware.
The National Car Rental branch is situated at 100 French St Unit 115A, Wilmington, DE 19801, USA. This address places it within the Wilmington Train Station, also known as the Joseph R. Biden, Jr., Railroad Station. This is a highly significant and convenient location for a specific segment of the Delaware population: those arriving by Amtrak train or commuting to and from the city center via rail. Its downtown Wilmington placement means it's easily accessible for city residents and those working in the central business district.
Being directly at the train station offers unparalleled convenience for passengers who need a vehicle immediately upon disembarking or before boarding a train. For local residents not utilizing train travel, accessibility to 100 French Street is generally good, as it's a prominent landmark in Wilmington and connected to major city roads. However, an urban, train station location might also come with challenges like limited parking for personal vehicles if you're dropping off, and potentially higher foot traffic. Understanding this specific context is key for Delaware locals when considering this National Car Rental branch.
National Car Rental, as a major player in the industry, generally offers a comprehensive suite of car rental services. At their Wilmington Train Station location in Delaware, customers can typically expect:
- Diverse Vehicle Fleet: National's fleet generally includes a wide range of vehicles, from economy and compact cars for efficient city driving, to mid-size and full-size sedans, SUVs, minivans, and sometimes premium or luxury vehicles. This variety aims to cater to different passenger capacities, luggage requirements, and preferences for driving across Delaware and beyond.
- Flexible Rental Periods: Customers can typically rent vehicles for various durations, including daily, weekly, and longer-term rentals, accommodating short trips, extended vacations, or replacement needs while a personal vehicle is undergoing maintenance.
- Online Reservation and Emerald Club Benefits: National offers a robust online booking system, and their Emerald Club loyalty program is a key feature. Emerald Club members often benefit from expedited service, the ability to bypass the counter, and the freedom to choose their own vehicle from the Emerald Aisle (at select locations), streamlining the pick-up process.
- Optional Add-ons and Protection Products: Like most major rental companies, National offers various optional services and protection plans. These may include GPS navigation systems, child safety seats, roadside assistance, and various levels of damage waivers (LDW) or supplemental liability protection (SLP) to provide peace of mind during the rental period.
- Refueling Options: Customers typically have choices regarding fuel, such as prepaying for a full tank, having National refuel for a service charge, or returning the vehicle with a full tank themselves.
- After-Hours Return: For added convenience, particularly at a train station location, after-hours drop-off options are typically available, allowing renters to return keys to a designated drop box outside of regular business hours.
While National Car Rental is known for its extensive network and corporate-friendly services, the provided customer reviews for the Wilmington Train Station branch highlight specific experiences that potential renters in Delaware should be aware of:
- Train Station Convenience (Potential): Being located directly within the train station is a primary logistical convenience for train travelers, offering immediate access to a rental vehicle upon arrival in Wilmington.
However, the customer feedback also points to significant operational challenges:
- Long Wait Times and Inefficiency: Customers report "very long to get a car" and a "least efficient" experience. This suggests a systemic issue with processing rentals quickly, which can be frustrating, especially for travelers with tight schedules.
- Vehicle Availability Issues: There are instances where vehicles are not readily available on the lot, requiring staff to "go drive it and pick it up for you." This indicates potential challenges with fleet management or readiness.
- Vehicle Cleanliness and Readiness Problems: Feedback mentions cars not being "ready or clean," and specific instances of "garbage in it" and expired garage passes. This points to significant lapses in quality control and vehicle preparation standards.
- Staff Presence and Communication Issues: A highly concerning review details arriving for a confirmed booking to find "no one was at the office" and "not a single employee in sight." Attempts to call customer service reportedly went unanswered. This is a critical failure in basic operational presence and customer support.
- Lack of Customer Support and Resolution: The feeling of being "stranded and completely screwed over, with zero support, no vehicle, and no explanation" underscores a profound breakdown in customer service and problem resolution at a critical moment for the customer.
- Overall Unprofessional and Frustrating Experience: The cumulative effect of these issues leads to descriptions of the "Worst Car Rental Experience Ever" and "most unprofessional and frustrating experience." This suggests deep-seated issues that impact the entire customer journey at this specific branch.
For Delaware residents needing to contact National Car Rental at the Wilmington Train Station, here's their direct information:
Address: 100 French St Unit 115A, Wilmington, DE 19801, USA
Phone: (302) 425-4404
Mobile Phone: +1 302-425-4404
Given the customer feedback regarding unresponsiveness, it is advisable for prospective renters to attempt contact well in advance and possibly have backup transportation plans, especially if arriving during off-peak hours or if their schedule is critical. While these are the official contact numbers, recent experiences suggest potential challenges in reaching a responsive representative.
For residents of Wilmington, DE, and the broader Delaware region, National Car Rental at 100 French St Unit 115A presents itself as a car rental option primarily due to its highly convenient location within the Wilmington Train Station. For those utilizing Amtrak services or working in the immediate downtown area, the proximity to a rental pick-up point is logistically advantageous.
However, based on the provided customer reviews, it is crucial for local users in Delaware to approach this particular branch with significant caution and managed expectations. The recurring themes of long wait times, uncleaned or unprepared vehicles, staff absence, and a perceived lack of customer support paint a picture of operational inefficiencies and a challenging customer experience. While National's brand reputation and Emerald Club benefits generally aim to streamline rentals, the feedback for this specific location suggests these benefits may not always translate effectively on the ground.
If this location is your only practical option, proactive measures such as confirming your reservation shortly before pick-up, arriving with extra time, and having alternative transportation plans (e.g., a ride-share app ready) could be advisable. For critical travel or time-sensitive needs, locals in Delaware might want to explore other car rental alternatives in the area, even if they are slightly less convenient in terms of direct train station access, to ensure a smoother and more reliable experience. While the convenience of location is undeniable, the current customer feedback indicates that reliability and service quality may be significant concerns at this specific National Car Rental branch.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This is easily the least efficient and the poorest experience I've ever had at a national car rental. The wait times are very long to get a car and oftentimes they have to actually go drive it and pick it up for you rather than just letting you go to the lot. In addition often times the cars are not ready or clean. Today got a car that had garbage in it and the pass to get out of the garage was expired. They do a really poor job of quality control here and I really wish there was an alternative to this national car rental.
Nov 18, 2024 · Christian HoeffelAbsolutely the Worst Car Rental Experience EverThis was hands down the most unprofessional and frustrating experience I’ve ever had with a car rental company. We had a confirmed booking, but when we arrived—no one was at the office. Not a single employee in sight. We tried calling customer service multiple times, and of course, no one picked up.We were left stranded and completely screwed over, with zero support, no vehicle, and no explanation. This is beyond unacceptable.I will never use this company again, and I will make sure to warn everyone I know to stay far away. If you value your time, money, or sanity—avoid this company at all costs.
Jul 03, 2025 · Darina GurI usually have a great experience at this location, but based on how I was treated during my recent interaction, I will have to start renting from another company moving forward. As an Executive Elite member, I am guaranteed a vehicle as long as the reservation is made at least 24 hours in advance. The morning I was scheduled to pick up my vehicle, I received a call from the location manager. During that call, he assured me that a vehicle would be held for me after I explained that I needed a car for an important appointment early the next morning. However, when I arrived at the location, another agent, Luke, informed me they were completely sold out and that there was nothing he could do. Despite my status, he offered no solutions and showed no empathy for my situation. After leaving, I contacted customer service twice that day, hoping someone could assist me. I was told both times that the district manager would be in touch that evening, but I never heard from anyone. As a result, I had to spend about $150 on an Uber to make my appointment. I’ve always rented from National and assumed my loyalty would ensure I was taken care of, but this experience has proven otherwise. At this point, I’ve exhausted all my options. Please do not reply with general customer service information or ask me to take additional steps, I’ve already done that. I’m sharing this so it’s understood how disappointing and frustrating this experience has been.
Jun 25, 2025 · Brittani TerryI have been an executive elite member for years. i rented from national as i always do for a business trip and used the express services once i reported their was a little dent in the lift gate by the handle and gave pictures you can see there is no other damage to the back of the vehicle. upon return of the vehicle the attendant stated he had to report it because he got in trouble for not reporting other damages to other vehicles. after i disputed it and sent in the photos they want me to pay over $1000.00 for something the previous renter did. i will never rent from them again even after renting from them for over 15 years.
Jan 23, 2023 · Taneka CookWill never rent from National again. Picked up & dropped off a car at this location, however, when the final bill came out a few days after drop off, I was charged almost $1,000 over what I was supposed to and was charged for dropping the car off at the Trenton, NJ location, which was clearly false. What a joke. After 4 phone calls to National corporate over the span of a month, I’ve been told 4 times now that I will be “receiving a call from a billing manager” regarding my almost $1,000 refund for being overcharged by National. It’s now been a month and I have yet to hear from anyone at National despite me calling 4 times. Decided to go the route of disputing the charge on my card. Do yourself a favor and GO ELSEWHERE.
