National Car Rental Introduce
For residents and visitors alike in California, particularly within the vibrant urban landscape of San Francisco, having access to a reliable car rental service is often a necessity for both daily life and exploring the diverse beauty of the Golden State. National Car Rental, a well-established name recognized for its commitment to business travelers and frequent renters, has a branch located at 340 O'Farrell Street in downtown San Francisco. This article aims to provide a clear, engaging, and informative overview of this specific National Car Rental location, guiding local users on its services, accessibility, and important considerations for a successful rental experience.
San Francisco offers a unique blend of iconic sights, charming neighborhoods, and cultural experiences. However, to truly immerse oneself in California's expansive offerings β from the breathtaking Big Sur coastline and the majestic redwoods to the world-renowned wine regions and national parks β the flexibility of a personal vehicle is often paramount. National Car Rental endeavors to provide a range of vehicles to facilitate these diverse travel needs, though customer experiences at this specific downtown location suggest the importance of careful planning and clear communication.
National Car Rental is conveniently situated at 340 O'Farrell St, San Francisco, CA 94102, USA. This address places it squarely within the heart of San Francisco's bustling Union Square district. This area is a major commercial and tourist hub, surrounded by numerous hotels, shops, restaurants, and cultural attractions, making it exceptionally accessible for individuals in the downtown core.
The central location provides excellent connectivity via San Francisco's robust public transportation network, including Muni buses and cable cars, and is within reasonable proximity to BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) stations. This means that locals don't typically have to venture far out of their way to pick up or drop off a rental car, saving valuable time compared to traveling to airport rental facilities. From O'Farrell Street, the branch offers relatively direct access to major city arteries that connect to freeways, allowing for a more efficient departure from the urban core and onto your California destination. The location's operating hours are typically Monday to Friday from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Saturday to Sunday from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, providing consistent availability throughout the week for pickups and returns. It is important to note that after-hours drop-off service is generally not available at this specific location, requiring vehicles to be returned during business hours.
- Diverse Vehicle Fleet: National Car Rental typically offers a wide selection of vehicles to suit various travel needs and budgets. This includes economy and compact cars (e.g., Nissan Versa, Chevrolet Spark) for efficient city driving, intermediate and full-size sedans (e.g., Toyota Corolla, Chevrolet Malibu) for general travel, and various sizes of SUVs (e.g., Chevrolet Equinox, Nissan Rogue, Chevrolet Suburban) and minivans (e.g., Chrysler Pacifica) for families or those needing more space. Specialty vehicles, which may include luxury cars or convertibles, might also be available, though their inventory varies.
- Online Reservations & Mobile App: Customers can conveniently reserve their preferred vehicle in advance through the National Car Rental website or their mobile app. This allows for streamlined booking and management of reservation details, though the actual pick-up process at this location may vary.
- Emerald Club Loyalty Program: National is well-known for its Emerald Club, designed for frequent renters. Benefits typically include faster service, choice of car from the Emerald Aisle (at participating airport locations), earning rental credits for free rental days, and expedited e-receipts. It is crucial to note that while this is a National branch, it is explicitly mentioned by customers that this is not an Emerald Club Aisle location, meaning members will likely need to go to the counter.
- Flexible Rental Durations: Options are generally available for daily, weekly, and longer-term rentals, accommodating both short excursions and extended travel plans across California.
- Optional Protection Products: Various insurance and protection plans (e.g., Damage Waiver, Personal Accident Insurance, Personal Effects Coverage) are typically offered to provide coverage during the rental period. Renters should carefully review these options to understand their scope and decide if they are necessary in addition to existing personal insurance.
- Additional Equipment: Renters can usually add useful accessories such as GPS navigation systems and child safety seats (infant, child, and booster) to their rental.
- Fuel Options: National generally provides different fuel policies, allowing customers to choose between prepaying for fuel, returning the vehicle with a full tank, or letting National refuel at a per-gallon charge.
- One-Way Rentals: For those planning trips that conclude in a different city or state, one-way rental services are generally available, although additional fees may apply.
- Cross-Border Travel: Vehicles rented in the U.S. can generally be driven throughout the U.S. and Canada. However, travel into Mexico is typically not permitted, and some specialty vehicles may have additional restrictions.
- Prime Downtown Location: The branch's position at 340 O'Farrell Street provides exceptional convenience and accessibility for individuals located in San Francisco's bustling city center.
- Reputable Brand: As part of the Enterprise Holdings family, National Car Rental is a globally recognized and established brand, often associated with business travel and reliability.
- Potential for Diverse Fleet: While specific availability varies, National typically offers a good selection of vehicle types, from economy cars for city driving to SUVs for longer trips.
- Customer Service Efforts: Despite reported challenges, one review noted that the employees at the counter were "kind," suggesting that individual staff members may still strive to provide good service.

For Californians, particularly those in the San Francisco Bay Area, National Car Rental at 340 O'Farrell Street offers a centrally located option for their vehicle needs. In a city where personal car ownership can be cumbersome, a downtown rental service provides valuable flexibility for weekend excursions, business travel, or temporary vehicle needs. Its easy accessibility via public transportation makes it a convenient choice for locals.
However, it is critically important for local users to approach their rental experience at this specific National location with a high degree of awareness and proactive communication, as indicated by the customer reviews. The feedback highlights significant concerns regarding reservation cancellations without notice, potential overbooking leading to long wait times, and issues with vehicle availability and condition. It's also explicitly stated that this is not an Emerald Club Aisle location, meaning members cannot bypass the counter as they might at airport branches.
To ensure the best possible experience, locals considering this National location should:
- Confirm Reservations Actively: Do not rely solely on initial booking confirmations. Call the branch directly (using the provided phone number) to reconfirm your reservation, especially during peak travel seasons or if your pick-up time deviates from the original booking, as reservations may be canceled if not picked up on time.
- Manage Expectations for Emerald Club Benefits: Understand that this location requires counter interaction, and immediate vehicle availability or class upgrades are not guaranteed, even for elite members. Be prepared for potential wait times.
- Inspect Vehicle Thoroughly: Before driving off, meticulously inspect the car's exterior and interior for any damage or cleanliness issues, no matter the vehicle class, and ensure it meets your expectations for features (e.g., Apple CarPlay) and fuel level. Document any discrepancies.
- Clarify All Terms and Conditions: Pay close attention to the rental agreement, especially regarding reservation pick-up times, late return policies, and the scope of any purchased protection plans or roadside assistance.
- Consider Alternative Locations: If your schedule is tight or if you require the full Emerald Club Aisle experience, consider exploring other National or Enterprise locations (given their shared ownership) at airports or larger off-airport branches that explicitly offer these expedited services.
While the central location is convenient, local users must be diligent and prepared for potential operational challenges to ensure their car rental experience from National on O'Farrell Street aligns with their travel plans for exploring California.

β 5β 4β 3β 2β 1It was an absolutely horrible experience at this National location. They canceled my reservation without any notice only because I did not pick up the car by the time it was listed on the reservation πππππ. And to make matters worse, they made absolutely zero effort to fix the mess they created in the first place. ...National sends several follow up messages after you finish renting car with them but when they cancel reservation for no reason, ZERO NOTICE. This crap needs to be investigated because I suspect corruption. My best response to this nonsense will be to avoid National as much as possible.
Mar 19, 2025 Β· Alvydas PIβve been a National Executive Elite member for a few years now and this is by far the worst location Iβve been to. This is not an emerald club location, you have to go to the counter. There were 40 people in the lobby waiting for vehicles. I waited about an hour for a car to become available, but it still wasnβt the size/level of car I had reserved. They only had a Nissan Versa, with gas half empty, a dirty exterior, and without apple car play. Only reason this isnβt 1 star is because the employees were kind.
Apr 14, 2025 Β· Sophie BagbyRented a White GMC Terrain for a weekend in San Francisco. Vehicle has 30K miles on it. While driving it, I noticed the engine was making a slightly different sound and at times it hesitated a little during acceleration. On our way out, we left early in the morning and while driving over the San Mateo bridge, the vehicle check engine light came on, and it reported the engine was operating at reduced power. We almost couldn't make it over the hump due to the reduced power. We made it off the bridge, again, operating at reduced power, and came close to airport. However, we started smelling smoke and had to park the vehicle at the side of the road. Because we had to catch a flight, we called for roadside assistance, asking them what to do with the vehicle and keys. They told us to return the keys to the rental agency and they would summon a tow truck. To identify your location, they send you a text message that reads your phone's GPS location. However, this doesn't appear to be specific enough. The called kept asking for more specific details, but we were on a random road by the airport without any obvious markers. We left the car and boarded our flight. For the next 4 hours, we would see trucks get summoned and then tickets cancelled. I was in direct contact with the tow trucks directing them to the exact location of the car, but the ticket would get cancelled by National. Another driver would get summoned, but attempt to contact me (but I was on a flight so I couldn't answer the phone), and then end up cancelling the ticket. I believe we had at least 3 tickets. I have tried calling National to get in direct contact with the SF office so I can mail them keys and resolve the rental properly, and I was notified I will get an email message from this (still waiting). It appears the car was successfully located and towed. I'll update this thread as the details get worked out. And I didn't get to fill up the gas tank before I returned it, because it was smoking.Obviously disappointed in the car and nearly ended up having my family stuck on the side of the San Mateo bridge and ruin everyone's commute. I am still a little unnerved by the experience.Edit #1: Despite what the friendly reply might lead you to believe, I've already called the Roadside assistance 2x, been forwarded to National's roadside assistance (first line of answering is just a contractor), and called the branch directly. I'm still waiting on the branch to respond directly. I did all that *before* writing the review. Still waiting on that email. :)Edit #2: Despite multiple assurances that the local SF office would call me (they can't transfer you),. the local SF office has ghosted me. No calls, no messages. Their SUV nearly stranded me on the bridge with my family, has major engine failure, belching smoke, and they won't even call to chat about it.
Feb 11, 2025 Β· Andrew ChancellorGreat team / service at National rent a car. They had an overload of customers ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. Despite that team kept their professionalism and friendly customer service, went above and beyond securing a car and even gave me an update to convertible BMW Z4 which was a great car for the Sonoma coast drive. Thank you team! Hope to rent from your location again soon!
Nov 29, 2024 Β· A DOne employee for all of the rental companies and you canβt use the emerald club so youβre made to stand in line with people from three rental companies at this location. Incredibly slow service.
