Drove car 1 day, about 50 miles and had a flat tire. There is no spare tire with vehicle. Payless/Avis was going to charge me a minimum of $130 to tow car back to airport so I could uber back to airport to get a replacement car. The tires were threadbare on the inside tread. Car had 35,000 miles so I’m sure they were the original tires. Dealing with Payless on phone was an absolute joke. The computer doesn’t understand English very well and when you finally get to a real person they are not helpful at all.I would very highly recommend against renting from Payless. I know I will never use them again.

We signed our initial paperwork which had a potential charge of about $700 (appeared to be the deposit, we assumed we would get that money back). We had to wait over an hour for our car, and were then told that we got upgraded FOR FREE because of the long wait time. When we returned the car we were fully charged for the $700 and given a bill listing many illegitimate charges. When my sister called today to see why we were charged so much (on top of the $300 we had agreed to pay for the car we were SUPPOSED to have), we were told that WE WERE CHARGED $700 FOR THE UPGRADE!!! That we didn't even ask for and were TOLD was free!! The attendant we spoke to on the phone was completely stubborn and unhelpful and claimed she had no record of us being promised a free upgrade. When we asked to speak to the superivsor we were put on hold for 15 minutes and then THEY HUNG UP. Absolute worst customer service ever and completely shady scam artists. Will be disputing the ILLEGAL and ILLEGITIMATE charge. Sooooo mad rn.

May 25, 2025 · Mike LI was sent back and forth between the counter and outside late at night in below freezing weather. I had reserved a mid-size SUV. The clerk at the counter was more interested in small talk about snowboarding than getting me on my way. I was told when I arrived that I was being 'upgraded' to a Durango. This is not an upgrade - the gas mileage is much worse than a mid-size SUV and it won't fit in the parking garage of the hotel I was staying in. I was told there was nothing smaller than the Durango available.Resigned to the Durango, I went out to the lot and saw many sedans. I asked if I could be swapped into a sedan and was given the keys to a Chevy Malibu. It was now 45 minutes since I had started trying to pick up my rental car so I did a quick walk around the outside, got in the car and left.The next morning in daylight I realized the interior was FILTHY. There were grease and food crumbs all over the interior and a liquid had been spilled down the driver door. I was 40 minutes away from the airport and my trip was only 40 hours so I didn't spend a couple of hours driving back, exchanging the car, and returning to my family.I received a third of the rental fee back for this experience. And I was still charged the SUV rate.

No AC in the building makes for many angry people waiting and rude staff. Not a well run business. Never again.UPDATE: The vehicle they contracted to me was filthy on the outside and inside. The previous occupant spilled something sticky in the console and it was not cleaned. As I was documenting damage on the outside, I had a difficult time distinguishing dirt from scratches and scuffs. Also, in the heat of the day, the inside smelled horrid. The windshield was cracked and a loud clicking noise appeared at around 50 MPH coming from the front passenger wheel well. I was not at all satisfied with the appearance of the vehicleAs per the rental agreement, at the time of drop-off, I presented a receipt for fuel showing that I filled the vehicle. The employee inside refused to look at it and suggested I keep it. The next day, I see a charge on my card. I contacted customer care which turns out is Avis and I spoke with Blake who was very helpful as courteous. He said that it was a fuel charge and when I asked he said it would be removed. Thank you Blake.I only wish the Payless employees where as professional as Blake the Avis customer care employee. Apparently Playless is a subsidiary of Avis. Avis should rename the company to GetLess because that would be honest.
