Routes Car Rental Introduce
For many residents of Illinois, particularly those traveling through Chicago or flying via O'Hare International Airport, securing efficient and affordable car rental is a key part of their journey. While major rental brands have a strong presence, independent operators often offer competitive rates and a different kind of service experience. Routes Car Rental, located in Schiller Park, Illinois, presents itself as one such alternative, positioned strategically near O'Hare to serve both local and inbound travelers. This article will provide a clear, engaging, and factual overview of Routes Car Rental, helping users in the Illinois region understand its unique offerings, operational details, and what to expect when choosing them for their transportation needs.
Routes Car Rental distinguishes itself by operating off-airport, which can often translate to more competitive pricing compared to the on-site rental counters at O'Hare. However, this also means understanding their specific pickup and drop-off procedures, which typically involve a shuttle service. This guide aims to equip Illinois locals with the essential information about Routes Car Rental, from its accessible location and vehicle offerings to insights derived from customer experiences, ensuring a more informed decision for your next car rental in the state.
Routes Car Rental is conveniently located at 3901 Mannheim Rd, Schiller Park, IL 60176, USA. This address places it just outside the immediate perimeter of Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD), making it a popular choice for travelers flying into or out of O'Hare who are looking for off-airport rental options. Mannheim Road is a major thoroughfare that connects various suburbs and provides relatively easy access to the airport terminals.
Being an off-airport location, Routes Car Rental does not have a counter directly within the O'Hare Multi-Modal Facility (MMF) or terminal buildings. Instead, customers typically utilize a complimentary shuttle service to get to and from the rental office. To access the shuttle from O'Hare, passengers should proceed to the upper level roadway (ticketing level) and look for signage to "Airport Transit." From there, board the Airport Transit System (ATS) train to the MMF (which also houses the main car rental center and Lot F). Upon arrival at the MMF building, proceed downstairs following signs for South Parking F and buses, and then call Routes Car Rental at (847) 671-4000. Their shuttle will pick you up outside of Bay 1 (in front of door 1). For returns, customers return the vehicle to the Schiller Park office, and the shuttle will transport them back to the airport. This system provides a practical and accessible link between the airport and the rental location, though it does require factoring in extra time for shuttle transfers, especially for outbound flights.
Routes Car Rental offers a range of standard car rental services aimed at providing diverse vehicle options for various needs. While customer experiences highlight specific aspects, the general services typically include:
Diverse Vehicle Fleet: Routes Car Rental generally offers a variety of vehicle classes. These commonly include economy cars for budget-conscious renters, compact and standard sedans for general travel, SUVs for more space and varied terrain, and potentially minivans for larger groups or families. Review information also mentions options like pickup trucks and even convertibles, suggesting a broad selection.
Short and Long-Term Rentals: They cater to both short-term (daily, weekly) and potentially longer-term rental needs, making them suitable for quick trips, vacations, or temporary vehicle replacements.
Third-Party Booking Compatibility: Routes Car Rental often partners with third-party booking platforms like Economy Bookings, Expedia, and Kayak, allowing customers to compare rates and book through these channels. This can sometimes lead to more competitive pricing.
Security Deposit and Payment: Like most rental companies, a security deposit is required, typically held on a credit card. It's crucial for renters to understand their debit card policy, as some customers have noted strict requirements for credit card deposits, particularly for local renters or those without return flight information.
Insurance and Protection Options: While customers can often purchase third-party insurance, Routes Car Rental may also offer its own insurance options and protection plans. It's vital to clarify what coverage is included or required to avoid unexpected charges.
Additional Services: Common add-ons like GPS rental, additional driver fees, and child safety seats are typically available for an extra charge.
Customer reviews offer valuable insights into the operational characteristics and service quality of Routes Car Rental in Schiller Park:
Competitive Pricing: A major draw for many customers, as highlighted in reviews, is the "cheaper rates than prices listed on Routes' website" when booked through third-party platforms. This often makes them a cost-effective alternative to larger, on-airport rental agencies.
Off-Airport Location & Shuttle Service: While it means an extra step, the shuttle service connecting the rental office to O'Hare airport is generally efficient, taking about 10 minutes. Customers appreciate the convenience of the shuttle for airport transfers, though some have experienced delays or issues with finding the shuttle.
Manual Assignment Process: You "have to talk to a representative to get your car assigned," which can be a double-edged sword. While it might take a little longer than automated processes, it allows for direct interaction and personal inspection of the vehicle, as noted by a positive reviewer.
Mixed Customer Service Experiences: Reviews present a mixed bag. Some customers have "wonderful" encounters with staff and shuttle drivers, describing them as "very proficient" and "friendly." However, other experiences report significant issues, including rude staff, unreturned refunds, and cars not matching reservations.
Refund and Deposit Issues: A significant concern raised by multiple customers revolves around the timely return of security deposits, with some reporting long delays or even non-receipt of refunds. This highlights the importance of understanding the deposit release policy and monitoring statements closely.
Vehicle Condition and Availability: While some vehicles perform "fine" and are considered "clean," one review noted receiving a "dirty, filthy and half a tank of fuel" vehicle that didn't match the reservation. This suggests that vehicle condition and exact model availability can be inconsistent.
Strict Policies (e.g., late pickup, local renter): Reviews indicate strict policies, such as the potential to lose a reservation (and payment) if more than two hours late for pickup, even with flight delays. Also, one review noted a policy against local rentals for residents without a return flight, which is a critical detail that may not be clearly communicated through third-party bookings.
For Illinois residents and travelers looking to contact Routes Car Rental in Schiller Park, the following information is available:
Address: 3901 Mannheim Rd, Schiller Park, IL 60176, USA
Phone: (847) 671-4000
Mobile Phone: +1 847-671-4000
Given the mixed customer reviews, it is highly advisable to call the branch directly to confirm all details of your reservation, especially regarding vehicle availability, specific policies (like those concerning local renters, debit cards, or late pickups), and the exact process for shuttle transfers and deposit refunds. Proactive communication can help mitigate potential issues.
For Illinois residents seeking car rental near Chicago O'Hare International Airport, Routes Car Rental in Schiller Park can be a suitable option, particularly for those who prioritize competitive pricing and are prepared to navigate an off-airport rental process. Its location on Mannheim Road, coupled with a dedicated shuttle service to and from O'Hare, offers a viable alternative to the more expensive on-airport counters.
The competitive rates, often accessible through third-party booking sites, make Routes an attractive choice for budget-conscious travelers. Many customers have reported positive experiences, highlighting efficient processes and friendly staff, particularly when expectations align with the independent nature of the business and its off-airport operation. The quick release of security deposits in some cases also demonstrates their capability for smooth transactions.
However, prospective renters, especially locals, must be thoroughly informed about potential challenges, such as occasional vehicle availability discrepancies, strict late-pickup policies, and particularly the need to clarify specific local renter requirements or debit card usage before booking. Proactive communication with the branch is paramount to ensure a seamless experience and to understand all terms, including those related to additional charges or deposit refunds. For the informed and prepared Illinois traveler, Routes Car Rental can indeed offer a cost-effective and convenient solution for their vehicle rental needs in the Chicago area.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Just got back a month ago from San Juan and rented a car there at the Routes Car rental agency. Upon picking it up, they didn’t have the vehicle that we originally reserved so we had to settle for a different vehicle that had just been returned. That was dirty, filthy and half a tank of fuel. The vehicle itself performed fine. The rental agent talk this into additional charges for tolls in a second driver, which we obliged to. They then proceeded to charge us an extra $250 on our statement saying that that would be returned to us upon returning the vehicle. When we returned the vehicle, the vehicle is in better condition than we originally received it in a full tank of fuel. We couldn’t find a check in person initially and as soon as they had one available, which happened to be the shuttle driver, they pushed us hard to get into the vehicle and when I asked about the $250 refund, they said that that would come to us within 10 to 12 business days that’s been a month ago and after Several phone calls to the company and Expedia we still have yet to see our refund. As of this moment, I wouldn’t recommend them. But that can change once I see a refund, for what due to me.Update as of 3/24/2025. No response from Routes as I can only assume they totally scammed me out of $250. I reached out to them several time with only a promise that I would see my $250 in a couple of days. Weeks later no further response from them. I am very disappointed with this company and their lack of response.
Mar 24, 2025 · Scott SurgesThis was my first time using Routes Car Rental and I found a deal through Economy Bookings, a third party platform that offered cheaper rates than prices listed on Routes' website. My total for a 3 days rental was only $126 included tax and my overall experience was better than all of the negative reviews that I came across.Routes is an independent company and it's located 10 minutes away from the airport so you won't be able to find their counter at O'Hare car rental hub. I suggest you return your rental at Routes a little earlier just to give the shuttle enough time to take you back to the airport for your flight.Unfortunately, you do have to talk to a representative to get your car assigned. The process was fairly quick and I was ready to drive off after confirming my insurance, returning flight, putting down a security deposit, and my own personal inspection of the car.Typical rental stuff when returning the car and my deposit was released from pending within two business day. My encounter with all the staffs, including shuttle drivers was wonderful and I will continue my business with Routes whenever I travel.
May 16, 2025 · Donna VuMy experience renting with this Routes location was quite satisfactory, my first time booking with them even. I was just a little bit surprised when I got to the car rental section at the airport and noticed there were like 3 mins away, which they provide complimentary rides from the car rental location at the airport and to the terminal( which is soo convenient to me).My experience was great, decent prices for rental.I will definitely book with them again and in different cities to get a unique feel across Routes' different locations.
Jan 13, 2025 · Prince Clarise PerimbieRecently rented from Routes through an online deal through Price Line. They don't have a presence at the airport so we had to take a shuttle to their business. The shuttle driver was very nice. He loaded our bags for us and he and my husband shared great conversation about sneakers 👟. Seems they are both "sneaker heads."The driver drove safely and we felt comfortable with him while heading over to the rental car place.Once we arrived the building looked quite "run down" and the people inside weren't overly pleasant to deal with. We of course had to put a credit card down for "incidental charges" - if applicable. I truly felt uncomfortable just because I hadn't heard of them before and the staff wasn't very reassuring. One thing I liked is that we ordered a mid size vehicle and they had Jeep Wranglers all over the lot. We got one and I was happy about that. I didn't book the trip but my husband said he thought we got good value for the money spent. The woman that assisted us told us to go to the back of the building to pick up the vehicle. When we got back there the vehicle was filthy. Mind you the weather had been wintery a couple days before our trip and it was cold but I saw other vehicles coming out of their detail area clean so that was quite annoying to me that the vehicle provided to us looked like 💩.My husband asked me not to say anything so I didn't but, I sure wanted to. We of course had to stop at a car wash soon after pulling off because you could barely see through the windows.I mean they expect for the vehicle to look nice when we bring it back and for fuel to be "topped off" the least they could do is start our travels off with the same.We had no issues with the truck while we had it. It seamlessly got us from point A to point B but the oil change sticker was out of date so hopefully someone just forgot to change it. Upon returning the vehicle the process was pretty simple and straight forward. The young man that assisted us was very cordial - which I appreciated. The shuttle bus driver who drove us to the airport was very nice and as personable as the first. He to drove well and got us to our destination safe and sound. All in all it was an okay experience. There were some positives but also some challenges. I would say our experience was just okay. Would I knowingly return in the future - probably not. If I book a trip and they are the option picked in the package I wouldn't be hard up about it because I now know what to expect, but if we got another messy vehicle the next time I'm saying something.Good luck on your travels! You have the details about our experience. Best of luck on yours if you ever rent from Routes.
Jan 17, 2025 · A-Team TravelsAfter reading the reviews I was really skeptical about booking with Routes. However, to my surprise it was such a breeze.I booked my reservation through Expedia, when I found a Jeep Wrangler for around $168 for 3 days. On your email reservation, they provide all the specifics you need at check-in. $500 credit card deposit, proof of insurance, and return flight details. I work in the hotel industry and a lot of reviews were upset about the $500 credit card deposit, but that’s normal in the hotel world. Depending on how many nights you stay at my hotel, it is $100 hold per day. The only thing that was not very specific on the email confirmation was the location of the shuttle. Once you get off the train and go down the escalator, walk out the doors that are at the bottom of the escalator.I made a mistake and booked the rental a day after I landed. Once i arrived to the location, I asked if I could add an extra night and they were able to do so, which took my total to $218~!The inspection process was a little strange, I’m usually walking a vehicle with somebody who works there. However, they send you and email with their own inspections. They told me to take pictures/videos as I wanted, so I did that. When I returned my car, I simply dropped it off and handed over the keys to the counter.
