For many residents in Florida, especially those utilizing Palm Beach International Airport (PBI), car rental services are a frequent necessity for travel, business, or leisure. Thrifty Car Rental, located conveniently near PBI, aims to provide affordable options for a wide range of needs. While often offering competitive pricing and a diverse fleet, it's important for local users to be aware of all aspects of the rental experience to ensure a smooth journey. This article will provide an overview of Thrifty's presence in West Palm Beach, its services, and crucial insights drawn from customer feedback, helping Floridians make informed decisions about their car rental choices.
Thrifty Car Rental is situated at 3175 Belvedere Rd, West Palm Beach, FL 33406, USA. This address places it within the immediate vicinity of Palm Beach International Airport (PBI), sharing a facility with Hertz. For travelers arriving by air, Thrifty typically provides a shuttle service that transports customers between the airport terminal and the rental counter. After collecting luggage at PBI, passengers can usually proceed to a designated rental car shuttle pick-up area to wait for the Thrifty/Hertz shuttle.
For West Palm Beach residents and those in surrounding areas, the Belvedere Road location offers convenient access, as Belvedere Road is a major thoroughfare connecting to I-95 and other primary routes. This means that while it's an airport-adjacent location, it's still relatively straightforward for locals to reach for their rental needs. It's crucial for customers to confirm their booking location as airport and off-airport branches can have different policies and operational nuances. The shared facility with Hertz indicates a combined operational approach for these brands at this location.
Diverse Vehicle Selection: Thrifty generally offers a wide range of vehicles to cater to different preferences and group sizes. Their fleet typically includes:
Economy and Compact Cars: Such as the Chevrolet Spark, Ford Fiesta, or Nissan Versa, ideal for fuel efficiency and budget-conscious travel.
Mid-size and Standard Sedans: Like the Toyota Corolla or Volkswagen Jetta, suitable for everyday driving and comfort.
SUVs: A variety of sizes, from Compact SUVs (e.g., Buick Encore, Chevrolet Trax) to Mid-size SUVs (e.g., Jeep Compass, Kia Niro EV), Standard SUVs (e.g., Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Edge), and Full-size SUVs (e.g., Nissan Armada, Chevrolet Suburban), accommodating families and those needing extra cargo space.
Minivans and Passenger Vans: Including the Chrysler Pacifica or Ford Transit, for larger groups or significant luggage.
Specialty and Performance Vehicles: Such as the Ford Mustang Convertible or Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport for those seeking a more adventurous or stylish ride. Thrifty also mentions a "Prestige Collection" including vehicles like the BMW X3 at select locations, which may extend to PBI.
"Manager's Special": An option where the car class is chosen by the rental company, often providing a good deal.
Flexible Rental Periods: Customers can book vehicles for daily, weekly, or longer-term rentals, depending on their specific requirements.
Optional Add-ons: Thrifty typically offers standard add-ons like GPS navigation systems, child safety seats, and options for additional drivers.
Online Booking: Reservations can be made and managed efficiently through the Thrifty website.
Competitive Pricing (Potential): Thrifty is often known for offering competitive prices, especially for pre-paid rentals. This can be a draw for budget-conscious travelers.
Vehicle Availability Challenges: A significant concern highlighted in customer reviews is the reported "lack of vehicles" upon pick-up, even for pre-paid reservations. Customers have experienced long wait times (multiple hours) or been told their reserved car class is unavailable, leading to frustration and potential extra costs for "upgrades." This suggests that confirmed reservations do not always guarantee immediate vehicle availability in the booked class.
Customer Service Inconsistencies: While some reviews mention "efficient" or "helpful" counter staff (like "Mina"), others describe situations where customer service was lacking in empathy or unhelpful in resolving issues, particularly when pre-paid reservations could not be honored. Issues with obtaining refunds or being forced to "pay them more" to get a vehicle are serious concerns raised by customers.
Strict Credit Card/Payment Policies: Thrifty, like other rental companies, has specific policies regarding payment methods, especially for debit cards. Reviews indicate that online banking cards or debit cards with lower limits may not be accepted for authorization, even if the rental fee itself is within the limit. This can lead to refusal of rental and denial of refunds for pre-paid bookings, causing significant inconvenience and financial loss to the customer. It's critical to review their detailed payment policies before booking, especially if using a debit or non-traditional credit card.
Vehicle Condition: While generally aiming to provide well-maintained vehicles, one review mentioned minor issues like a "leak in tire" or "climate control flaw," suggesting that while cars generally "ran great," a quick personal inspection upon pick-up is always advisable.
Association with Hertz: Thrifty is part of the Hertz Corporation (which also includes Dollar Car Rental). Customers should be aware that operational policies or service standards might sometimes reflect the broader corporate policies of Hertz.

For Florida locals, particularly those around West Palm Beach and utilizing PBI, Thrifty Car Rental offers a potentially budget-friendly option for their car rental needs, thanks to its competitive rates and diverse fleet. Its location near the airport with shuttle service provides a basic level of convenience for travelers.
However, it is crucial for locals to approach Thrifty with a high degree of awareness, especially concerning pre-paid reservations and payment methods. The consistent customer feedback detailing issues with vehicle availability upon arrival, reported pressure to "upgrade" for an available car, and strict, sometimes unforgiving, debit/credit card policies are significant red flags. While some customers have had smooth experiences, others have faced considerable frustration and financial loss.
Therefore, while Thrifty might appear as a tempting option due to pricing, Floridians considering this company should:
Verify Payment Method Acceptance: Call ahead to confirm that your specific credit or debit card will be accepted for authorization, especially if it's an online banking card or has a lower limit.
Be Prepared for Potential Delays/Changes: Understand that even with a pre-paid reservation, the specific car class might not be immediately available, and be ready to discuss alternatives or wait.
Document Everything: Take photos/videos of the vehicle's condition at pick-up and drop-off, and keep detailed records of all interactions and charges.
By taking these precautions, locals can better navigate the potential pitfalls and, hopefully, secure the economical and convenient rental experience that Thrifty aims to provide, ensuring their Florida travels remain as smooth as possible.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I pre-paid for a rental and when I went to pick up my car there were many people angry due to the lack of vehicles and customer service. It then became obvious after talking to several people who had been there for multiple hours with no end in sight that the only way was to pay them more otherwise, no car, no refund. The manager stated that the only way to get a refund was to in writing send a letter. If you want to be held up for more money, then this is the place to go. I paid another $300 to upgrade while there were many vehicles in that class ready to be given, but not willingly given. I have photos of these vehicles, so this cannot be disputed. Otherwise I highly recommend that you stay away.
Feb 18, 2024 · Brian SweigI paid for a 4 day rental in advance to go to Port St Lucie FL to visit my mother in hospice who's health is deteriorating. When I got to thrifty rental in PBI airport they informed me that they won't take my credit card since it's an online visa banking card and it was only card I had. 800 limit. They refused me and denied my request for a refund which resulted in hundreds of dollars getting around over the weekend using lyft. I'm so upset with this rental company and I will be getting In touch again on Monday when billing is open demanding my refund or legalities will follow. The Hertz company oversees thrifty Dollar hertz etc. I'd stand clear of this company. They lacked empathy about my situation and shrugged me off. As a customer service manager I am disgusted with how this is being handled. Even if I did have a card they accepted for authorization they gladly charged my card rental fee. Before they rejected my card The car I rented wasn't even available from the get go. Said it'd be 45 minute wait.
Apr 14, 2025 · Craig TerlinoI would have given 5 stars the reason I only gave 2 stars is because of the long wait at the pickup point…mine was only about 20 minute but beyond me there must of have been at least 15-20 customers their wait I estimate must been 1-2 hour since there was only one representative working on a very busy night the good was car very new 2024-2025 Toyota Camry that drove great and very clean out and in and it seemed all other cars on the lot very new and clean.
Jul 19, 2025 · Joseph OnoratiI have rented from thrifty many times over the last few years. Sometimes the experience is good and sometimes it sucks. This time it was awful. I accidentally rented an EV. I have nothing against electric cars but the rental was an accident. The very small EV next to the car type at the very bottom of my email was overlooked. Never noticed it in any communication thrifty sent me. Didn’t realize the mistake until I arrived at the counter. As if that wasn’t bad enough, albeit, my mistake, I went through all of the pre-registration a week prior. Filled out all the info, uploaded. Y license and entered my cc. I did all of this for my rental in Nashville 6/1-6/3 without incidence and that rental experience was wonderful. Despite going through the exact same thing for this current rental, 6/21 at PBI, the experience was anything BUT wonderful. I received an email from Thrifty upon arriving at PBI offering to let me skip the line for $9.99. The rental counter at the airport was closed so we took the shuttle to the offsite rental counter. Once arriving, the line was long, as usual, only a couple representatives working, so I decided to lay the $9.99 and skip the line. I went through all the prompts, and when I got to the screen to choose my car, there was one pic of a “surprise car” covered in a tarp with the words “none available” go to counter. Well, what on earth was the point of offering this service if there were no cars to choose from? We wait in line and the customer service representative that helped us was awful. She was rude, she was unprofessional and was as helpful as a rock. When she told me I had rented an EV I told her it was a mistake. I had not intended to rent an EV, I didn’t want an EV, and I never noticed that’s what I rented. Her solution to this issue was to repeat over and over, see, it says EV atThe bottom of the email. 😡😡😡. I asked to change to a gas powered car. She said it would cost more and there was nothing she could do to help me. She could offer bo assurance but to give me an EV. The ONLY thing she told me about the car was that I should charge it often as it could take many hours to charge otherwise. Why even rent a car like that? I was on a graduation vacation trip with my kids and the last thing I wanted was to be forced to spend hours at an electric charging station. So, we get in the car, figure out how to do some basic stuff and off we go. The car was at 95% at 12:30 on 6/21. By 8:30 pm on 6/22, 30 hours later, it was down to 47%!! Are you effing kidding me? So, I find a charging station, figure out how to use it, and after 40 minutes, the car has charged 5%! WORSTEXPERIENCE EVER from Thrifty and I will never rent from them again.
Jun 22, 2025 · Shari MorrisI've tried many different rental places and this location in West Palm Beach is horrible from customer service to the different hidden fees they have. I'll never attempt to get a rental here again and also why tell me I can use a debit card. Just to tell me I'm not allowed to use it when I'm the counter
