For individuals residing in or visiting the dynamic state of Illinois, having access to reliable and flexible transportation is a fundamental necessity. Whether it's for a cross-country journey, a business trip within the state, or simply navigating Chicago's vibrant urban landscape, a car rental can make all the difference. Budget Car Rental, located at 214 North Clark Street in the heart of Chicago, aims to provide solutions for these diverse needs.
Budget is a well-known name in the car rental industry, part of the Avis Budget Group, offering a range of vehicles typically from economy cars to SUVs and even some premium options. This particular downtown Chicago location is often chosen for its convenience. However, like any large service provider, customer experiences can vary. This article aims to provide a clear and factual overview of what Illinois users might expect from Budget Car Rental at its Clark Street location, drawing on both typical service offerings and reported customer interactions to help you make an informed decision for your next rental.
Budget Car Rental is strategically located at 214 North Clark Street, Clark & W Wacker Dr, Chicago, IL 60601, USA. This highly central address places it in the bustling heart of downtown Chicago, offering exceptional accessibility for a wide range of individuals across Illinois.
Situated at the intersection of Clark Street and Wacker Drive, the location is easily reachable for Chicago residents, especially those working or living in the Loop and surrounding areas. Public transportation, including various CTA 'L' train lines and bus routes, provides direct access to this vibrant district. For those arriving from outside Chicago, whether from other parts of Illinois or out of state, the location offers relatively straightforward access from major expressways leading into downtown. Being positioned at a prominent intersection like Clark and Wacker also means it’s a familiar landmark for many, simplifying navigation. The convenience of a downtown pick-up and drop-off point can be a significant advantage, especially for business travelers or those seeking immediate access to a vehicle without venturing far from the city's core.
- Diverse Vehicle Fleet: Budget Car Rental typically offers a wide array of vehicle classes to meet various customer needs and budgets. This includes economy cars (e.g., Kia Rio), compact cars (e.g., Kia Soul), midsize cars (e.g., Toyota Corolla), full-size cars (e.g., Toyota Camry), SUVs (e.g., Toyota RAV4, often available in various sizes), minivans, and sometimes premium or luxury options (e.g., Genesis G70 or similar for upgrades).
- One-Way Rentals: Budget often facilitates one-way rentals, allowing customers to pick up a vehicle at the Chicago location and drop it off at a different Budget location, which is ideal for long-distance travel, such as a 3,000-mile journey across states.
- Flexible Rental Periods: Customers can typically rent vehicles for various durations, from daily rentals to weekly or even monthly long-term options, depending on their travel or business requirements.
- Online Booking and Management: Budget provides an online platform and mobile app for booking reservations, checking availability, comparing prices, and managing existing bookings (modifying, extending, or canceling reservations).
- Optional Add-ons: Common extras include GPS navigation systems, child safety seats (infant, toddler, booster), satellite radio, and additional driver options to enhance the rental experience.
- Various Protection Products: Budget offers optional protection plans such as Loss Damage Waiver (LDW), Supplemental Liability Protection (SLP), Personal Accident Insurance (PAI), and Personal Effects Coverage (PEC). Renters are advised to review their personal auto insurance and credit card coverage before purchasing these options.
- Fastbreak Program: For frequent renters, the Fastbreak program offers expedited service, allowing members to bypass the counter, go directly to their car, and speed up the return process with e-receipts.
- Age Requirements: Generally, the minimum age to rent is 21, and an underage surcharge may apply for renters between 21 and 24. Some vehicle classes might have higher minimum age requirements.
- Potential for Upgrades: As highlighted in a customer review, there is a possibility for positive experiences like receiving a significant vehicle upgrade, such as a Genesis G70, particularly if arranged by an accommodating staff member. This can turn a standard rental into a much more comfortable and enjoyable journey.
- Central and Accessible Location: Situated at the busy intersection of Clark and Wacker, the branch is highly convenient for anyone in downtown Chicago, making pick-ups and drop-offs efficient for urban dwellers and business travelers.
- Wide Range of Vehicle Options: Budget, as a large national brand, typically offers a broad selection of vehicles, from economical compacts to larger SUVs, providing choices for various travel needs and budgets in Illinois.
- One-Way Rental Capability: The ability to facilitate long-distance, one-way rentals (e.g., across 3,000 miles) is a key feature for specific travel scenarios, offering flexibility that not all local branches might support.
- Part of Avis Budget Group: Being a part of a major rental car conglomerate provides a certain level of brand recognition and established processes, offering a sense of reliability for many customers.
However, it is also important to consider certain reported aspects:
- Inconsistent Vehicle Quality: One review noted receiving an older vehicle (a "beat up Rav 4" instead of a reserved "nice Camry") lacking modern safety features like blind spot detection and adjustable cruise control. This suggests that the condition and modernity of vehicles can vary.
- Customer Service Concerns: Some reviews mention "snippy" counter staff and drop-off personnel, along with a perceived lack of concern for customer well-being, particularly in challenging situations (e.g., no cell service, no Wi-Fi, no taxi number provided in unfamiliar downtown area). This indicates a potential inconsistency in service quality.
- Known Cellular Service Issues: It has been acknowledged that the specific location might suffer from poor cellular service, which can be problematic for customers trying to use ride-sharing apps or make calls upon drop-off.
- Lack of On-Site Amenities: The absence of Wi-Fi or assistance with calling taxis during cell service issues at the drop-off point highlights a potential gap in immediate customer support for certain needs.

For Illinois residents seeking a car rental in Chicago, the Budget Car Rental at 214 North Clark Street offers distinct advantages, primarily its highly convenient downtown location. This makes it an accessible option for those working or living in the Loop, as well as for travelers arriving in the city, providing a quick gateway to exploring Chicago or embarking on longer journeys across Illinois. The possibility of snagging an upgrade, as experienced by one customer with a Genesis G70, can certainly be a highlight, offering a more luxurious and comfortable ride than initially anticipated.
However, it is crucial for locals to consider the varied customer experiences reported. While some find staff accommodating and benefit from surprising upgrades, others have encountered older vehicles lacking modern features, along with less-than-ideal customer service interactions. Concerns about "snippy" staff and a perceived lack of proactive assistance in challenging situations (like poor cell service at the location) indicate that the overall experience can be inconsistent. This means that while Budget offers competitive pricing and a broad fleet, renters from Illinois should be prepared for potential variations in vehicle quality and customer service, and should not automatically expect premium amenities or proactive assistance in all scenarios.
Therefore, for Illinois locals, Budget Car Rental at this Chicago location can be a suitable choice, especially for those prioritizing a central pick-up point and potentially seeking value. However, it's advisable to manage expectations regarding vehicle specifics and customer service consistency. It would be prudent to thoroughly inspect your assigned vehicle before leaving the lot and ensure you have alternative ways to communicate or navigate, given the reported cellular service issues in the immediate area. By being prepared for a range of possibilities, Illinois users can still leverage the convenience of this Budget location for their transportation needs.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I was coming in for a car for Hertz last minute, and called Budget looking for anything that had a one way that was crossing 3,000 miles with $600 budget. The gentleman who assisted me gave me an awesome upgrade to a Genesis G70 for a little over my budget after he heard my desperation, and I gotta admit, it's a great idea to get that car to LAX, I can see it making a lot of money out there, it was a very comfortable car.Big thanks to Budget group part of the Avis team, I definitely know who I'll be using in the future and who I'll recommend.
Jul 10, 2025 · Mike FThe car was older than I expected and did not have the safety features that my past two cars have had (2 in ten years). I haven’t had to fish keys out of a purse in a decade - no blind spot detection - no adjustable cruise. I ordered a nice Camry but got a beat up Rav 4. The Check in counter was snippy. The man In the drop off basement was snippy. Everyone else in Chicago has given excellent customer service so I’m not going to blame the culture. Maybe Budgets culture is to blame. Cellular service was in and out by the second and I couldn’t reach Uber by my phone. The man was not snippy but when I asked about the service he blamed Chicago Downtown. It’s a known issue there at his site. When I asked if there was wi-fi there was none. I asked if he had a number for a taxi and there was none. So the cell service in this area is a known issue. He sent me out in an unfamiliar city, a lone female with 150 pounds of luggage in 90 degree weather and 100% humidity without any concern FOR A BUDGET CUSTOMER THAT HAD JUST PAID - I walked three blocks and got cell service and Uber treated me very well. Again it’s not a Chicago issue its a Budget problem - I do not recommend
Jun 26, 2025 · Jennifer BrazilThe process of getting the car was quick and easy. The garage staff was super friendly and helpful, shout-out to the lady at the downstairs! That’s the only good thing I have to say about this place. The normal staff seem friendly and nice but there was another person (I think manager) who had this attitude. I made a change on my rental after I pre paid and apparently it’s more work for her and lashing out us. Making comments that pre paying would save $10 for this lot of hassle for her. We were renting for 5 days and obviously we would pre pay which actually saved us $250 on the rental and if she has the problem with budget policy she should check with their management, not lash out for doing what budget offered. The car we got was also not properly checked - the tire pressure was not checked and seems like this is trend from this rental (seen couple other reviews like this). It was so stressful to drive for 5 days filling more air as we do the road trip. As it was a holiday weekend no cars were a available.Definitely not recommend this place!!
Dec 01, 2022 · GautamI rented a car from 335A S Franklin St, and their service is absolutely terrible. This place is a complete scam! They take extra money as a "security deposit" and make it nearly impossible to get it back. After more than 20 calls, they still overcharged me and refused to refund the proper amount. Their practices are unethical and dishonest. Avoid this place at all costs—find another car rental company that doesn’t cheat its customers!
