Dollar Car Rental - Fort Lauderdale International Airport Introduce
For many Floridians, especially those in the South Florida region, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) serves as a vital gateway for both domestic and international travel. Whether returning home from a trip, embarking on a family vacation, or needing a temporary vehicle for local use, access to reliable car rental services directly at the airport is a key convenience. Dollar Car Rental, a well-known name in the car rental industry, maintains a significant presence at FLL, often attracting customers with its competitive pricing. This article provides a comprehensive and factual overview of the Dollar Car Rental location at Fort Lauderdale International Airport, detailing their services, accessibility, and, critically, important insights gleaned from recent customer experiences that every local user should consider for a smooth rental process.
While the promise of affordability can be a strong draw, it's essential to understand the full scope of what a rental experience entails, particularly from an airport location that handles a high volume of travelers. This guide aims to equip Floridians with the necessary information to navigate their car rental needs effectively with Dollar at FLL, balancing budget considerations with expectations of service quality and vehicle readiness.
The Dollar Car Rental counter at Fort Lauderdale International Airport (FLL) is strategically situated directly within the airport's consolidated Rental Car Center, offering a high degree of accessibility for travelers. Their address is:
600 Terminal Dr, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33315, USA
Upon arrival at FLL, passengers can easily locate the Dollar Car Rental counter by following the clear signage directing them to the Rental Car Center. Dollar is typically located on Level 4 of this center. This on-airport location eliminates the need for shuttle buses to off-site facilities for vehicle pickup, providing a streamlined and often quicker transition from plane to rental car.
To pick up your rental, you simply proceed to the Rental Car Center, located at 600 Terminal Drive. Once inside the center, follow the signs to the Dollar counter. For returns, customers are directed to navigate to the Rental Car Center (Cypress Garage, 600 Terminal Dr) and follow signs for "Rental Car Return" to enter the facility. This integrated setup is a major convenience for both arriving and departing travelers, ensuring a seamless experience within the airport complex itself. The Rental Car Center operates from 4 AM to 1 AM daily, accommodating a wide range of flight schedules.
As a well-established global brand, Dollar Car Rental at FLL offers a broad spectrum of services designed to cater to various customer needs. These typically include:
Diverse Vehicle Fleet: Dollar provides a wide selection of car classes to accommodate different budgets and preferences. This typically ranges from fuel-efficient economy and compact cars (like the Ford Focus or Chevrolet Spark) for solo travelers or small groups, to mid-size and full-size sedans, SUVs (including models like the Manager Special EV, Nissan Pathfinder, or Chevrolet Trax), minivans, and sometimes specialty vehicles. The "Manager Special EV" is noted as a popular choice, indicating the availability of electric vehicles.
Flexible Rental Durations: Customers can book rentals for various periods, including daily, weekly, or monthly options, providing flexibility for short trips, extended stays, or temporary transportation solutions for locals whose personal vehicles are unavailable.
Optional Add-ons and Equipment: To enhance the rental experience, Dollar typically offers:
- GPS Navigation Systems: For easier navigation around Florida.
- Child Safety Seats: Infant, toddler, and child/youth safety seats are available for an additional charge.
- Additional Drivers: The option to add more authorized drivers to the rental agreement, often with a fee, though spouses or domestic partners meeting requirements are sometimes free.
Fuel Policy Options: Dollar offers flexible fuel policies, including:
- Prepaid Fuel (Charge Purchase Option - CPO): Purchase a full tank upfront and return it at any level (no refund for unused fuel). For EVs, this allows return at any charge level above 10%.
- You Refuel: Return the car with a full tank and provide a receipt from a station within 10 miles of drop-off.
- We Refuel: Dollar refuels the vehicle upon return, with the cost added to the bill (often with a service fee).
Insurance and Protection Plans: Dollar provides various optional insurance and protection products, such as Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) and Personal Effects Coverage (PEC). Renters are advised to review these options carefully and compare them with their personal auto insurance or credit card benefits to avoid unnecessary costs while ensuring adequate coverage.
Dollar Express Rewards Program: For frequent renters, Dollar offers a loyalty program that allows members to earn points and potentially expedite the rental process.
Payment and Deposit Options: Major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are accepted for reservations and deposits. Debit card acceptance can be more restrictive, especially for certain car types or without a ticketed return travel itinerary, and typically requires a higher deposit ($300-$5000, refundable in 30-60 business days).
When considering Dollar Car Rental at Fort Lauderdale International Airport, here are some key features and important considerations, based on their standard operations and recent customer feedback:
On-Airport Convenience: A significant highlight is Dollar's location directly within the FLL Rental Car Center on Level 4. This provides a major convenience for Floridians arriving by air, allowing for quick and direct access to their rental vehicle without the need for additional shuttle services to off-site locations.
Competitive Pricing: Dollar is often known for its competitive pricing, which can be a key deciding factor for budget-conscious renters seeking an affordable option for their travel within Florida.
Diverse Fleet, Including EVs: The availability of a wide range of vehicle classes, including popular models like the Ford Focus and the "Manager Special EV," provides options for different travel needs and preferences, catering to a broad customer base.
Formalized Fuel Policy: Dollar has a clear, stated fuel policy with multiple options (prepay, refuel yourself, or Dollar refuels). This offers flexibility, but as customer reviews indicate, issues can arise if the policy is not accurately communicated or adhered to by staff, or if the car is received with less than a full tank.
Customer Service and Communication Challenges: A recurring concern in customer feedback relates to customer service. Reviewers note difficulties reaching a live person through phone lines ("all automated"), "rude" counter staff, and challenges in resolving issues like incorrect fuel charges. This suggests potential frustrations for customers needing specific assistance or dispute resolution.
Vehicle Shortages and Wait Times: Some customers have reported a "shortage of cars" leading to "long wait times" with "tens of other customers" at the Fort Lauderdale location. This indicates that despite being a large operation, availability can be an issue during peak periods, causing significant delays.
Inconsistent Vehicle Readiness: A notable complaint is receiving a rental car with an "empty gas tank" upon pickup, despite the standard expectation of a full tank. This immediately creates an inconvenience and can lead to billing disputes, as seen in the customer reviews.
Disputes over Toll Transponders and Charges: There have been issues with conflicting information regarding Sunpass transponder usage. Customers were told they could use their personal transponder before booking, but then advised at the counter that they had to rent one at an "exorbitant price." This lack of transparency regarding additional costs is a significant detractor.
Automated vs. Human Interaction: The shift towards a heavily "automated experience by phone or Internet" is a highlight for some but a drawback for others, especially for those with "specific needs" that require direct human interaction and adaptability from an agent.
For direct inquiries, reservations, or to address any concerns regarding Dollar Car Rental at Fort Lauderdale International Airport, you can use the following contact details:
Address: 600 Terminal Dr, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33315, USA
Phone: (954) 377-8550
Mobile Phone: +1 954-377-8550
While the local phone number is provided, customer reviews indicate challenges in reaching a live person. For general customer service or disputes, Dollar's main customer service number (often listed as 1-800-800-5252) may be necessary, but be prepared for automated systems and potentially long wait times. It's always advisable to document all communications and keep records of your rental agreement and any related issues.
For Floridians navigating travel in and out of Fort Lauderdale, Dollar Car Rental at FLL offers the undeniable convenience of an on-airport location and generally competitive pricing, making it an accessible option for temporary transportation. Its presence within the airport's Rental Car Center means a straightforward pickup and drop-off process, which can be a significant time-saver compared to off-site rental agencies. The variety of vehicles, including popular models and EVs, caters to different preferences and needs for exploring the extensive Florida landscape.
However, it is crucial for locals to approach their rental from Dollar at FLL with informed awareness. Recent customer experiences highlight recurring issues that could impact the overall satisfaction of the rental process. Concerns such as receiving vehicles with empty gas tanks, disputes over fuel and toll charges, challenges in reaching live customer service, and occasional long wait times due to car shortages, are all factors that Floridians should consider. To ensure a smoother experience, it is highly recommended to:
- Thoroughly inspect the vehicle upon pickup, documenting fuel level, any existing scratches, dents, or cracks with time-stamped photos or videos.
- Clarify all charges upfront, especially regarding fuel policies and toll transponders, and obtain written confirmation where possible.
- Be prepared for potential reliance on automated customer service for post-rental issues.
While Dollar's affordability and airport convenience are appealing, proactive measures from the renter's side are essential to mitigate potential frustrations and ensure a positive car rental experience at Fort Lauderdale International Airport.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Upon leaving the airport and getting out in the freeway, we noticed the gas tank was empty so we had to make a stop. Never have we experienced this but whatever. Then I get the bill today and we were charged for a full tank of gas even though it told the attendant we returned it without a full tank because that’s how we got it. She told us, “Not a problem”.Also when picking up the rental, the lady at the counter was rude. Before making the reservation, I specifically asked if we could use our personal Sunpass transponder for the tolls and was told yes but the attendant in the airport said no and that we would have to rent one at an exorbitant price! Not happy! I’ve tried to call customer and guess what? It’s all automated and never get an actual person.Time stamped photo of empty gas as we left airport after pick up. Call me Dollar to resolve this!
Jun 21, 2025 · Betty BThe problem with dollar is that they have tried to go completely to an automated experience by phone or Internet. Problem with that is if you have any specific needs you're not able to contact an agent at your location who might be able to adapt to those needs. At the location in Fort Lauderdale that I've rented the car from, it seems that there are a shortage of cars, and customers often have to wait with tens of other customers until they provided car for each customer. The car they provided seemed like a good car when I received it and during the rental. But make sure you check the car for scratches, dents or window cracks.
Jun 21, 2025 · DSAfter a 30-minute flight delay (thanks, weather), we got our bags and headed to pick up our Dollar rental car. Naturally, Dollar was closed. Fine, these things happen. We were redirected to the third floor, where Hertz, Dollar’s apparent parent company, was supposed to help us.The line wasn’t terrible, contrary to what others have said (small blessings, I guess). But once we got to the front, we were met with a firm “no” and a shrug. Because, surprise! We weren’t Hertz customers, even though, silly me, I thought booking through Dollar (a Hertz-owned company) meant we’d still have, I don’t know… a car?By now it was 3 a.m., and the cashier’s attitude could best be described as “deeply inconvenienced by our existence.” I understand no one’s perky at that hour, but when your entire job is customer service, maybe pretend to care just a little? We were told to wait until 5 a.m. to get the car we’d already reserved. It was a masterclass in disorganization, topped off with a heavy dash of condescension. If you enjoy being stranded at an airport in the middle of the night while being treated like an inconvenience, I can’t recommend this place enough. Otherwise, steer far, far away.0/5 stars. An unforgettable experience, for all the wrong reasons.
Jun 14, 2025 · Ava SalvatoreMy vehicle was dirty. I had to deal with ants, roaches & whatever other bug that I couldn’t identify. The previous renter had a spill of some sorts, and it wasn’t cleaned out: mind you, I had 4/5 cars to choose from. The first one, I saw a bug & I quickly got out but the one I picked wasn’t any different.
Jun 23, 2025 · Blessing AyitiPickup was very good. But my flight home was cancelled and then rebooked to Miami instead of FT Lauderdale airport, 60 minutes away. I was charged $351 extra to drop my car off at a different airport. My total cost of the rental was $427 that is 82% of my total cost of the rental. That is a total ripoff. Uncalled for. I can understand a small fee but not that much of an increase. especially since it was on an hour away.
