For Arizonans, especially those in the East Valley like Mesa, dependable transportation is more than a convenience – it's a necessity for navigating our widespread communities, accessing incredible outdoor adventures, and managing daily life. Whether your personal vehicle is temporarily out of commission, you have family visiting from out of state, or you're planning a thrilling road trip through Arizona's diverse landscapes, a reliable car rental service is invaluable. Hertz Car Rental, with a key location at 6033 S Sossaman Rd in Mesa, positioned directly at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport (AZA), aims to be your trusted partner for all these needs.
Hertz is a globally recognized leader in the car rental industry, known for its extensive fleet and commitment to serving both leisure and business travelers. For locals in Arizona, this particular branch offers a distinct advantage: the convenience of an airport location without the often overwhelming scale of larger international hubs like Phoenix Sky Harbor. It provides a familiar brand experience for those seeking temporary mobility solutions within our state, whether for a few days or longer.
This article will delve into the specifics of the Hertz Car Rental branch at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. We'll examine its strategic location and accessibility, outline the comprehensive range of services it provides, and highlight key features that potential renters should consider. Importantly, we'll integrate real customer feedback to offer a balanced and factual perspective, helping you make the best choice for your car rental needs in Arizona.
The Hertz Car Rental branch is situated at 6033 S Sossaman Rd, Mesa, AZ 85212, USA. This address places it directly within the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport (AZA) complex. For residents of Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler, and other East Valley cities, this location offers unparalleled accessibility.
Being an airport car rental facility, it's inherently designed for convenience. Travelers flying into AZA can easily access the rental counter upon arrival. For locals, its position on Sossaman Road, a well-traveled thoroughfare, makes it straightforward to reach by car from various parts of Mesa and the surrounding metropolitan area. This accessibility bypasses the often more congested routes leading to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, offering a more localized and potentially quicker pick-up and drop-off experience for Arizonans not flying in. The branch operates extended hours, typically from 7:00 AM to 11:30 PM, seven days a week, further enhancing its convenience for various schedules.
Hertz Car Rental, including its Mesa Gateway Airport location, offers a comprehensive range of services and a diverse fleet to cater to a variety of customer needs.
- Extensive Vehicle Fleet: Hertz provides a broad selection of vehicles to suit different preferences and purposes. This typically includes:
- Economy and Compact Cars: Ideal for solo travelers or couples, offering excellent fuel efficiency for city driving and shorter trips across Arizona.
- Sedans (Mid-size, Full-size, Large): Popular choices for everyday use, business travel, or comfortable road trips, with models like Chevrolet Malibu or Mazda 3.
- SUVs (Small, Medium, 7-Passenger): Essential for families, groups, or those needing extra cargo space, perfect for exploring Arizona's diverse terrains, with options like Nissan Rogue or Nissan Pathfinder.
- Minivans and Passenger Vans: Accommodating larger groups or families, such as the Chrysler Pacifica or Ford Transit.
- Specialty Vehicles: Depending on availability, this may include luxury cars, convertibles, or even specific utility vehicles like pickup trucks or cargo vans for unique requirements.
- Electric Vehicles: Hertz is expanding its EV fleet, offering a more sustainable travel option for those looking to explore Arizona with less environmental impact.
- Flexible Rental Periods: Customers can rent vehicles for various durations, from daily and weekend rentals to weekly or even monthly long-term options, providing flexibility for different travel plans or temporary vehicle needs.
- Protection Options: Hertz offers various optional protection products, such as Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) and Liability Insurance Supplement (LIS), for an additional daily charge. These can provide peace of mind by reducing or waiving financial responsibility for damage to the rental car or third-party liability. Renters are encouraged to check their personal auto insurance or credit card benefits for existing coverage.
- Add-ons: Common add-ons include GPS navigation systems, child safety seats (infant, toddler, and booster), and satellite radio, enhancing the convenience and safety of the rental.
- Fuel Purchase Options: Customers have choices for refueling the vehicle upon return, including prepaying for fuel, refilling it themselves, or having Hertz refuel it at a charge.
- Age Requirements: The minimum age to rent at this location is 18 years old, though a young driver surcharge may apply for renters under 25, and restrictions may apply to certain vehicle classes for younger drivers.
- After-Hours Return: As an airport location, Hertz typically offers an after-hours return facility, allowing customers to drop off the vehicle and keys securely outside of regular business hours.
Hertz aims to provide a reliable and efficient car rental experience, and this Mesa Gateway Airport location shares many of the brand's core features, alongside some specific points highlighted by customer feedback.
- Airport Convenience: The primary highlight is its location directly at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, offering seamless access for arriving and departing travelers, and a convenient option for East Valley residents who prefer a smaller airport experience.
- Hertz Gold Plus Rewards: For frequent renters, the Hertz Gold Plus Rewards program allows members to bypass the counter, go directly to their car, and earn points for free rental days. This can significantly expedite the pick-up process, a valuable feature for locals on a tight schedule. However, one review noted a potential operational gap: "If you’re Presidents club there isn’t a board and there are no keys in the cars. You have to wait in line. Not the end of the world by any means, but that’s not obvious on the Hertz website/app so didn’t want you to be confused or walking around a lot checking doors." This indicates that while the program exists, its implementation at this specific branch might not always offer the full advertised counter-bypass benefit.
- Dedicated Staff (Individual Performance): Despite overall challenges, individual staff members have received praise. A customer highlighted, "The one gentleman working behind the desk was fabulous. So thankful he was there with a smiling face to help all of us get cars and on our way. He gets 5 stars." This suggests that while systemic issues may exist, there are dedicated employees striving to provide good service.
However, it is crucial for potential renters to be aware of significant concerns raised in recent customer reviews regarding this specific location:
One detailed review described a frustrating experience with communication and accountability: "I had a prepaid reservation at this location for a weeklong rental... But because of a flight delay, I ended up landing at Phoenix Sky Harbor around 11 PM instead of Mesa. I called the Mesa Hertz location before they closed and asked if I could still pick up the car after 11:30 PM. The person on the phone said no, they don’t offer after-hours pickup. But then a few minutes later, that same person called me back and said I could pick up the car at the Phoenix Airport Hertz, and that they would just cancel the reservation in Mesa... That turned out to be a mistake. When I arrived, they had no record of my reservation or any transfer... The next day, I drove to the Mesa location... Matt, the assistant manager, told me the reservation had been canceled overnight and offered nothing. No effort to check who I spoke to the night before, no review of call logs or voicemails, not even a basic attempt to troubleshoot. Just “Sorry, there’s nothing I can do,” repeated over and over... I ended up spending far more than I intended, all because of poor internal communication and a lack of accountability." While the customer later updated their review to acknowledge a resolution from corporate, the initial experience highlights significant issues with inter-location communication and local accountability.
Another review noted operational inefficiencies: "This location though only gets 3, due to the lack of a dedicated Hertz counter and lack of Gold Member/Presidents Club functionality which created longer lines and an hour long wait (and more) for everyone. The airport was really overcrowded (not Hertz fault) but because Hertz, Dollar & Thrifty share a counter, only had one employee, and there was no board for Gold Members nor keys in the cars for them, the process was longer for all customers." This indicates potential for long wait times due to shared counters and limited staff, even with loyalty program memberships.

Given the issues raised in reviews, it is highly advisable to call ahead to confirm your reservation and any specific requirements, especially if you have a tight schedule or are relying on loyalty program benefits.
For residents of Arizona, particularly those in Mesa and the East Valley, Hertz Car Rental at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport (AZA) presents itself as a conveniently located option for vehicle rentals. Its position directly at a key regional airport offers ease of access, bypassing the need to navigate to busier major airport hubs for those residing nearby. This geographic advantage is a significant factor in its suitability for local users seeking a straightforward pick-up and drop-off point for their temporary transportation needs.
The inherent benefits of renting from a global brand like Hertz, including a diverse fleet covering everything from fuel-efficient sedans to spacious SUVs ideal for Arizona explorations, and the potential for expedited service through programs like Hertz Gold Plus Rewards, add to its appeal. These features are designed to provide a comprehensive and generally reliable rental experience, which is valuable for Arizonans who rely heavily on personal vehicles for their daily lives and leisure activities.
However, it is crucial for locals to approach this location with an awareness of the operational challenges highlighted in recent customer feedback. While some individual staff members receive high praise, the recurring themes of communication breakdowns between locations, lack of local accountability for reservations, and operational inefficiencies (like shared counters leading to long waits, even for loyalty members) are significant. For an Arizonan depending on a rental car for a critical appointment or travel plan, these issues could lead to considerable frustration and unexpected costs.
Therefore, while the Mesa Gateway Airport Hertz branch offers the fundamental advantages of location and brand backing, locals are advised to take proactive steps. This includes double-checking all reservation details with the specific branch prior to arrival, understanding their policies thoroughly, and being prepared for potential wait times. For those who prioritize a seamless experience above all else, verifying operational efficiency and confirming specific loyalty program benefits directly with the branch beforehand would be a wise precaution. Ultimately, with careful planning and clear communication, this Hertz location can still serve as a practical option for many Arizona residents.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Update:After reaching out directly to Hertz’s customer service by email, I received a response not long after. They looked into the situation and offered a resolution that honored the terms of my original reservation, even though it wasn’t fulfilled due to communication issues between locations.Although I did have to start a new rental agreement at a higher cost at the time, I appreciate that someone on their team took the matter seriously once it was escalated. The follow-up was professional, and I’ve updated my reviews to reflect that. That said, I still hope the Mesa location makes some internal improvements—especially around communication and accountability—so other customers don’t have to go through the same stress. I’m open to further conversation if anything else develops.Original:I don’t usually write reviews like this, and I honestly don’t enjoy complaining. Normally I’d just move on and not come back. But I hope that sharing my story helps someone else avoid going through the same thing.I had a prepaid reservation at this location for a weeklong rental. Everything was confirmed ahead of time, the price was fair, and I was looking forward to a smooth trip. But because of a flight delay, I ended up landing at Phoenix Sky Harbor around 11 PM instead of Mesa.I called the Mesa Hertz location before they closed and asked if I could still pick up the car after 11:30 PM. The person on the phone said no, they don’t offer after-hours pickup. I was fine with that—I get it.But then a few minutes later, that same person called me back and said I could pick up the car at the Phoenix Airport Hertz, and that they would just cancel the reservation in Mesa. It sounded like a simple internal handoff, so I trusted the advice and went downstairs to the Phoenix rental center. That turned out to be a mistake. When I arrived, they had no record of my reservation or any transfer. I was told that my reservation still showed as active in Mesa and there was nothing they could do. So now it’s close to midnight, I’m traveling with my elderly mom, and I have no car.The only person who genuinely tried to help was Gabriel, the agent at the Phoenix Hertz. He explained what happened, showed empathy, and wished there was something he could override. That kind of service stood out—and I appreciated it. He deserves credit. The next day, I drove to the Mesa location to try and pick up the original rental, thinking it was just a miscommunication. But when I arrived, Matt, the assistant manager, told me the reservation had been canceled overnight and offered nothing. No effort to check who I spoke to the night before, no review of call logs or voicemails, not even a basic attempt to troubleshoot. Just “Sorry, there’s nothing I can do,” repeated over and over. He told me to call customer service like that would magically fix the whole thing.I ended up spending far more than I intended, all because of poor internal communication and a lack of accountability. To be honest, I normally stick with a trusted suite of companies—my hotels, my rental cars, my credit cards. But after this experience, I don’t know if I can keep Hertz in that lineup unless someone makes this right. This issue is still ongoing. I’ve filed a complaint and shared my experience on other platforms, and I’ll update this review if Hertz follows up or makes it right.

Mar 28, 2025 · Jessica Lynn ShullI’m extremely disappointed with my experience today. I booked a same-day rental at 4 p.m. and even called around 6 p.m. to confirm — no one answered or returned my call. I then paid $100 for an Uber to get to your location at Mesa Gateway Airport by 9 p.m., only to be told that same-day appointments weren’t being honored and that someone should have contacted me — but no one did. As a result, I was left stranded at the airport with my hotel in Phoenix and no transportation. I lost a full day of meetings and events today, and now instead of attending more scheduled events tomorrow, I have to spend the morning trying to sort out a car rental situation that should’ve already been handled. This experience was not only frustrating and unprofessional, but it’s also caused major disruption to my work and schedule.
May 22, 2025 · Tyler WeedenWe had a great experience with our customer service rep.Arrived Feb 2nd approx. 7-7:30 pm. Reserved SUV was not available and he worked for several minutes to get us set up with a sedan that worked great for us! He was respectful and trying his best with the situation.
Feb 19, 2025 · d. G.Waited an hour in line to get told they ran out of cars, even though we had a reservation for months. It was 1:30 in the morning and their best advice for a good customer was to go to the cab stand and call back in the morning. I understand things happen in business and mistakes are made, but how you handle the situation for the customer is what matters. They offered no help or assistance and left everything up to us. Had to get an Uber at 2 in the morning and they didn’t offer to pay for anything. Called back the next morning to see if I could get a vehicle or how they would correct the problem and they wouldn’t even answer their local number they told me to call. Voicemail was not set up either, so you couldn’t even leave a message. Some of the worst customer service around.
