Unlike airport-only locations, this "Hertz Local Edition" (HLE) branch focuses on neighborhood rentals, catering to a diverse clientele including local residents needing temporary transportation, college students (with age-related restrictions and fees), business travelers, and tourists exploring Yale University and other downtown attractions.
The company's overarching goal is to provide a wide selection of well-maintained vehicles and efficient service. - Honoring Reservations, Even with Errors: The willingness to honor a reservation, even when a "computer error" results in a significant upgrade (like a Tesla for the price of a compact), demonstrates a commitment to customer satisfaction and fair dealing.
- Clean and Functional Vehicles: Regardless of the car class, the vehicles are consistently reported as "clean" and "drive well enough," providing reliable transportation without unnecessary frills. This focus on basic functionality and cleanliness is highly valued by renters.

- Problem-Solving Approach: The staff's ability to "solve problems," such as finding an alternative car when the reserved one isn't ready, ensures a smoother experience even when unexpected issues arise.
However, it is important to acknowledge areas for improvement noted by some customers. Occasional delays, especially on busy weekends, and a "small, tight" parking lot for returns can present challenges. Additionally, one negative review highlighted a sudden price surge during a walk-in inquiry and frustrating customer service, underscoring the importance of clear communication and transparency, particularly for on-the-spot rentals.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I come here often. The George Street Hertz in New Haven is good. Not great. Good. That's why I give it four stars. That's why I keep coming back. The people know what they are doing. The man at the counter recognized me this time. He smiled. It was a true smile. Not the fake kind they teach in training. He knew my name from the computer and said it without looking up again. That is how it should be.They try to sell you things you don't need. They always do. Insurance. Fuel plans. GPS units. Baby seats. It is their job. They are friendly about it. When I say no, they nod and move on. No pressure. Just business.I always take the cheapest option. Economy. Compact. Whatever costs least. That is my way. Once they had a Tesla for the same price as a compact. Some computer error. They honored it. I drove away in silence. The acceleration was there when needed. Like Musk himself when another child needs naming. Sudden presence. Quick decision. Then gone again to the next thing. The cars are clean. Always clean. This matters. The cheap ones drive well enough. No frills. Just transport. That is all you need. The price is what matters. The function. Not the name or the shine. The waiting area is nothing special. White walls. Standard counters. The yellow Hertz sign. A television that no one watches. It is functional. It works. That is all you need.Sometimes there are delays. This is true. On busy weekends, you might wait an hour. I avoid weekends when I can. If you reserve ahead and arrive on a Tuesday morning, you will be driving within fifteen minutes. This is the best time. I have learned this through experience. The lot is small. Tight. It sits on a busy corner downtown. Parking when you return can be tricky. You learn to maneuver. You adapt. The first time is confusing. The fifth time is routine. What makes this place work is the staff. Not perfect. But good men. They solve problems. Once, my reserved cheap car wasn't ready. The man behind the counter found another. No extra charge. Another time the radio didn't work. They didn't argue. Just noted it on the form. No problems at return. The location is convenient. Ten minutes from the train station by foot. Near enough to Yale. Central to downtown. Easy access to I-95 and the Merritt Parkway. Location matters for a rental place. This one has it right. They could improve some things. The weekend staffing. The return process. The upselling scripts they must follow. But the core of the business works. They give you a reliable car when you need it, even the cheapest ones. They are honest about costs. The people are good.I have used many Hertz locations. This one is familiar now. Not perfect. But consistent. That is why I return. That is why I give it four stars. In the world of car rentals, consistency matters more than perfection. A good place depends on good people. This location has them. I will keep coming back. Even if just for the cheapest car they have.
Apr 27, 2025 · Jeremy EdmundsDisappointed by Sudden Price Surge and Poor ServiceMe and my friend walked into Hertz today planning to rent a car, and within just 5 minutes, the prices for every car on the lot jumped by nearly $50. I had been discussing options with the staff, and suddenly the rates changed while I was still waiting—without any explanation. It felt like a bait-and-switch tactic, especially when you’re already in the middle of the process. On top of that, the wait time was unreasonable, and the overall customer service experience was frustrating and unhelpful. If you’re going to adjust prices, at least be transparent about it and honor the rates shown when a customer first walks in. This kind of practice damages trust and discourages walk-in customers from ever returning
Jul 10, 2025 · Yalamanchili NiteshI don't know about all these bad reviews! I had a very pleasant experience! They gave me a 2025 Hyundai SantaFe! Loved it! Clean and smooth vehicle the girls were all nice and polite. I just returned my rental and it was smooth! I definitely recommend!
Jul 06, 2025 · C GuzmanHertz is terrible and unresponsive, the car was disgusting on the inside and undercharged by 50% what it said on the rental receipt and now are trying to charge my card for the superchargers when the have a 200$ hold on my cc maxing it outI call the branch because Customer service for corporate can’t do anything, and the phone just rings and rings and rings.I will definitely never be renting from this location ever again And probably never renting from Hertz ever again Unless this is rectified, I work in customer service In my company, would never do something like this Especially when they tend to advertise about gold standards in cleanliness
May 22, 2025 · Joseph Perruzzisome people should not work in customer service. Hertz forgot to close my contract and overcharged me $1800 for a $66 payment.when speaking with the lady the first day, she said she was gonna investigate, and I felt ok. When calling back one of the guys there asked me why am I calling back? She is working on it.how rude can you be? What do you mean why am I calling back? How are you mad at the person that is out of $1800! Make it make sense! NoSome business do not care after their customers just the customers money!
