Hertz Car Rental - New York - West 83rd Street Introduce
For New Yorkers, the convenience of having a car can open up a world of possibilities, from weekend escapes upstate to essential errands that are just easier with wheels. While public transportation is the backbone of the city, car rental services provide flexibility and access that many residents need from time to time. Hertz, a globally recognized name in car rental, has several locations across New York City, including a branch on West 83rd Street in Manhattan's Upper West Side.
Hertz offers a broad range of vehicles and services, catering to various needs, from compact cars for city driving to SUVs for family trips. As a major player in the industry, they typically aim to provide a standardized experience, but as with any high-volume service in a busy urban environment, the local experience can sometimes differ.
Unfortunately, the provided customer reviews for the Hertz Car Rental - New York - West 83rd Street location highlight some significant challenges that New Yorkers might encounter. One customer's experience captures a common frustration: "I wouldn't say I've ever had a great experience at this location. There's typically a long wait to get your car (show up at least 45 minutes before your reservation cause you'll be in line). However, my latest experiences were horrendous. I rented a car for approximately 8 hours. I returned at this location and they never processed the return. Five days later, Hertz sent a text message saying that my rental was overdue. I called the number and the "correction" to reflect that the car was returned was for 5 days after I returned the car. Hertz then charged me $300 more than I owed. When I called to try to fix this, I was advised I need to call billing on Monday because they can't help me. Not sure why customers need to spend all this time correcting the error that is no fault of their own." This review points to issues with efficiency, billing accuracy, and customer support responsiveness, which can be particularly frustrating for busy New Yorkers. The customer also mentions receiving a car with a partially full tank despite the contract stating full, an issue that required extra effort to rectify.
Another review corroborates the operational difficulties: "Horrendous service and experience. Get ready to sit in your car as you leave the lot. We've been there several times and only one exit is open. Cars also converge into one lane from three different areas and no one directs traffic. It creates arguments. Badly managed. Also, I tried calling that location to retrieve a bag I had left by accident. No one answered the phone. Even going to another Hertz location, they couldn't reach the local office. F for service and overall." These accounts paint a picture of a location that, despite being part of a large brand, struggles with local management, customer service, and operational flow, leading to considerable inconvenience for customers.
Hertz Car Rental - New York - West 83rd Street is situated at 157 W 83rd St, New York, NY 10024, USA. This places the branch in the heart of Manhattan's Upper West Side, a vibrant residential and cultural neighborhood known for its proximity to Central Park and various cultural institutions.
The location offers relatively good accessibility for Manhattan residents. It is within walking distance of several subway lines (likely the 1, B, and C trains, given its proximity to Central Park West and Broadway), providing convenient connections from other parts of the borough. Bus routes also traverse the area. For those arriving by taxi or rideshare, West 83rd Street is easily navigable. However, as noted in customer reviews, while getting to the location might be straightforward, the process of picking up or dropping off a vehicle and navigating the immediate lot environment can be a significant challenge due to operational issues. This is a crucial consideration for New Yorkers, who value efficiency and ease of transit.
As a major global car rental company, Hertz generally offers a wide array of services and vehicle types, which would typically be available at this New York City location.
- Standard Car Rentals: A comprehensive selection of vehicles for various needs, including economy, compact, mid-size, and full-size sedans, suitable for daily commutes or city excursions.
- Diverse Vehicle Categories: Beyond standard sedans, Hertz's fleet typically includes SUVs (various sizes), minivans, and potentially specialty vehicles from their "Prestige" or "Adrenaline" collections, offering options for families, group travel, or a more premium experience. They also offer electric vehicles (EVs) in their "Green Traveler Collection."
- Short-Term and Long-Term Rentals: Flexibility in rental durations, from hourly and daily rentals to weekly and monthly options, accommodating various travel plans.
- One-Way Rentals: The ability to pick up a car at this location and drop it off at another Hertz branch, either within NYC or across the country, offers convenience for longer trips.
- Insurance Replacement Rentals: Hertz frequently works with insurance companies to provide replacement vehicles for customers whose cars are undergoing repairs after an accident or breakdown.
- Additional Equipment and Protection Options: Customers can typically add GPS navigation, child safety seats, and various protection plans (like Loss Damage Waiver and Liability Insurance Supplement) to their rental.
- Hertz Gold Plus Rewards: A loyalty program that allows frequent renters to earn points for free rental days and expedited service, though the reviews suggest the expedited service at this particular location might be inconsistent.
While the provided reviews highlight operational challenges, Hertz as a brand does offer certain features that are generally considered highlights. It's important to distinguish between brand offerings and the execution at a specific branch.
- Global Brand Recognition and Network: Being part of a major international brand means access to a vast network of locations, which can be beneficial for one-way rentals or support when traveling.

While Hertz is a global brand with a large fleet and diverse offerings, the reviews for this particular branch highlight significant operational challenges, including long wait times, billing inaccuracies, and difficulties in reaching local staff for assistance.
The convenience of its Upper West Side location is undeniable for many residents, offering a nearby option for car rental. The array of vehicles available, from compact cars for city zipping to SUVs for family outings, caters to various needs. However, the recurring issues with service and efficiency, such as unprocessed returns and chaotic lot management, suggest that customers might need to allocate extra time and be prepared for potential follow-up if choosing this specific location.

Assuming I would have been charged for this as well. I had to then call Hertz (where it's impossible to get a human) to try to correct this so I wouldn't be billed for it.I generally have no issues with Hertz, but this particular location has very poor service.

Mar 22, 2025 · daniele menacheMy experience is not with the rental process I have never rented from the location and don’t plan too. My experience is walking down the street to this establishment. The inconvenience of having cars pull up for you by employees quickly turned into a nightmare of unsafe practices and unresponsive customer service. Employees smile or laugh when pulling up quickly as if it’s a game they are playing scaring my son and when walking down the street. They pulled up hastily, sometimes speeding on busy sidewalks, which is not only irresponsible but also dangerous. This behavior is completely unacceptable and reflects poorly on the company's standards. Nobody honks there is no light or indication that cars are coming. To compound the issue, when attempting to contact the local office to report these incidents, my calls went unanswered repeatedly. It's incredibly frustrating when you're trying to address a serious safety concern and no one from the company seems willing to respond or take responsibility. After multiple failed attempts to reach the office, I even tried to escalate the matter to the manager, but again, no response. This lack of communication and disregard for customer concerns is deeply concerning. To the manager of this business shame on you for not addressing this issues.I have included a picture at 8:14 in the morning today a car was pulling up so fast scaring my son and I the driver clearly seen our reaction and thought it was funny.
Jul 10, 2024 · Maria SArrived at 8:15am to pickup my car. There was a line of 20 people. Did not get my car until 1.5 hours later. This must be the slowest, most inefficient Hertz I have ever been to. Staff are not helpful nor kind.
Aug 31, 2024 · Bob SmithA warning to Tesla and other car manufacturers diversifying their fleets to electric vehicles, as well as to customers who, in good faith, wish to contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector: rental agencies like Hertz are actively working against you. They impose outrageous EV recharging surcharges on rentals and mislead customers about the EV charging process.I was blatantly misled by the local staff at the Hertz Upper West Side location. I rented a car for a few hours for a quick round trip to Connecticut, opting for the so-called "Manager’s Special" offer on their website. Expecting a straightforward and convenient rental for my short trip, I instead encountered a deceptive practice. The Upper West Side staff deliberately assigned me an EV, claiming it was part of their "Special Offer," yet they failed to provide crucial information regarding:1. The average time required to recharge the vehicle. (Two hours of charging for a six-hour rental? The "Manager’s Special" seemed like a complete scam.)2. The availability of local EV charging infrastructure. On a Saturday afternoon in the Upper West Side, charging stations are scarce. This essential information should have been disclosed before committing customers to such an impractical rental contract.I am certain many other customers have been similarly deceived by Hertz’s hidden costs associated with EV rentals. I now await legal action and consumer advocacy efforts demanding greater transparency, accountability, and compensation for these misleading practices. To be continued.
