For those of us in California, particularly within the vast sprawl of Los Angeles, a reliable and straightforward car rental experience is often essential, whether for local errands, a weekend getaway, or managing daily life when our own vehicle is unavailable. While numerous car rental companies operate throughout the region, understanding their specific policies and customer experiences can significantly impact your journey. Today, we're focusing on NextCar, a rental service located in Los Angeles, which also operates under the name 24/7 Rental, as noted by customers. This article aims to provide a factual and informative overview, drawing directly from publicly available information and real customer feedback, to help you, as a local user in California, navigate their offerings and make an informed decision for your transportation needs.
The choice of a car rental provider can greatly influence the ease and satisfaction of your trip. Beyond simply finding an available vehicle, understanding a company's approach to insurance, deposits, and customer service is crucial. NextCar (operating as 24/7 Rental) at their Santa Monica Boulevard location presents itself as an option for renters in Los Angeles. However, as customer testimonials often highlight, the details of the rental process can vary significantly from one provider to another, even within the same market. We will delve into key aspects of NextCar's service, including their location, the types of services offered, and critical insights gleaned from the experiences of past renters, to give you a clearer picture of what to expect.
NextCar is located at 7415 Santa Monica Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90046, USA. This address places it in West Hollywood, a vibrant and well-known area of Los Angeles. Its location on Santa Monica Boulevard means it's situated along a major thoroughfare, making it relatively accessible for those living in or visiting West Hollywood, Hollywood, and surrounding neighborhoods like Beverly Hills.
While the address itself is central, accessibility for customers is an important consideration. Being on a main boulevard, the branch is likely reachable via various local transportation options, including ride-sharing services, taxis, and public buses that operate along Santa Monica Blvd. However, being in a busy urban area also means that traffic congestion can be a factor, potentially impacting travel time to and from the rental office, especially during peak hours. For those flying into LAX, it is important to note that this location is not within the immediate airport complex, meaning customers would need to arrange separate transportation (e.g., shuttle, taxi, ride-share) to reach this specific branch after landing, or before departing. Some customer experiences suggest that potential renters should be aware of the exact pick-up procedures and location details to avoid any last-minute confusion, as this can add to the overall travel logistics.
NextCar (also known as 24/7 Rental) offers standard car rental services, though with specific policies that customers should be aware of.
Vehicle Rentals: They provide a range of vehicles for rent, typically including various car classes from compacts to SUVs, though specific availability and condition can vary, as indicated by customer feedback regarding vehicle damages.
Required Insurance Coverage: A key service requirement is that renters must show proof of their own personal auto insurance with collision coverage. If a renter's personal insurance (including policies bought through third-party booking sites like Priceline) is not accepted or deemed insufficient, customers are required to purchase NextCar's own insurance (e.g., Physical Damage Waiver, Supplementary Liability Insurance). This is a mandatory aspect of their service. Travel insurance is explicitly stated as not accepted.
Security Deposits: NextCar requires a security deposit for all rentals. According to their policies, this deposit can range from $500 to $1500, with higher amounts potentially for certain vehicle categories or local renters. There is a stated policy that this deposit can be held for up to 20 business days (or 10-14 business days, depending on the source of policy information), which means the funds may not be immediately available after the rental return.
Debit Card Policy: While some NextCar locations may accept bank-issued debit cards with certain conditions (e.g., a one-time fee, proof of full coverage insurance, and a return airline ticket/boarding pass for non-local renters), some sources indicate a strict "no debit cards" policy at specific locations or for certain types of rentals (e.g., luxury vehicles). A physical credit card in the renter's name is generally a requirement.
Limited Mileage for Local Renters: For local renters not flying into LAX or without a boarding pass/return airline ticket, there are specific restrictions including a deposit of $1000 and mileage limitations (e.g., 10 free miles per day, with additional miles at $.39). Proof of residence (pay stub, utility bill) and a major credit card with full coverage insurance are required for local renters.
Based on customer reviews and their stated policies, NextCar (24/7 Rental) at the Santa Monica Blvd location has several notable features and highlights, though some are points of concern for renters.
Mandatory Insurance Purchase: A significant highlight, though often a negative one for customers, is their policy requiring customers to purchase NextCar's insurance if their pre-existing personal or third-party insurance (e.g., from Priceline) is not accepted. This can lead to unexpected additional costs and last-minute changes to rental agreements, causing frustration for customers who believe they already have adequate coverage. One customer reported being informed of this policy only "7 minutes prior to my pick up."
Extended Security Deposit Holds: The policy of holding security deposits ($500-$1500) for an extended period, potentially "up to 20 business days," is a significant concern for many customers. This means that a substantial amount of money can be tied up on a renter's credit card for weeks, even after the car has been returned without issue, impacting their financial liquidity.
Vehicle Condition Issues: Some customers have reported receiving cars with "numerous dents, damages and major scratches on the exterior." Despite the presence of other similar, undamaged vehicles on the lot, renters were allegedly told no alternatives were available, leading to discomfort and anxiety for the driver. This highlights a potential inconsistency in vehicle quality and customer service regarding fleet management.
Customer Service Interactions: While one review mentioned individual employees being "admittedly kind," the overall impression of customer service, especially concerning policy enforcement and addressing issues, appears to be mixed. Instances of unresponsiveness to phone calls post-rental and a feeling that the company "felt so scammy" suggest a lack of transparent and supportive engagement with customers facing problems.
Booking Platform Discrepancies: Customers booking through third-party platforms like Priceline have encountered issues where policies (e.g., insurance acceptance) were not clearly communicated until the time of pick-up, leading to unexpected additional charges or the need to cancel trips entirely. This implies a disconnect between their booking terms on external sites and their in-person requirements.
Emphasis on Due Diligence: A critical takeaway from customer experiences is the strong recommendation for renters to take "LOTS of photos and videos when renting and returning their vehicles" as a safeguard against potential disputes over damages. This suggests a need for customers to be highly proactive in documenting the vehicle's condition.

For California locals, particularly those in the Los Angeles area, considering NextCar (or 24/7 Rental) for their car rental needs, it's essential to approach the decision with a clear understanding of their specific policies and reported customer experiences. While the Santa Monica Boulevard address offers a convenient location within West Hollywood, the details of their rental process—especially regarding insurance requirements, security deposit holds, and vehicle condition—are critical factors that differentiate them from other providers.
The policy requiring customers to purchase NextCar's own insurance if their personal or third-party insurance is not accepted can lead to unforeseen costs that were not part of the initial booking, potentially turning an affordable rental into a more expensive one. Furthermore, the practice of holding security deposits for an extended period (up to 20 business days) could significantly impact a local renter's finances, tying up funds that might be needed for other expenses. Reports of receiving damaged vehicles and challenges in resolving disputes or communicating with the company post-rental also suggest that a rental from NextCar might come with added anxiety and potential complications. Therefore, while NextCar is an option for car rental in Los Angeles, California locals are strongly advised to thoroughly review all terms and conditions, specifically regarding insurance and deposit policies, and be prepared to meticulously document the vehicle's condition before and after rental. This proactive approach is crucial to mitigate potential issues and ensure a more predictable experience, allowing you to determine if their services align with your comfort level for renting a vehicle in the Golden State.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Beware. What a horrible experience. This company called me 7 minutes prior to my pick up to tell me they do not accept the insurance I bought through Priceline when I booked with them and I had to buy their insurance. Then they gave me a car with numerous dents, damages and major scratches on the exterior and they said they didn’t have another car to give me when there was a similar car on their lot without damages. I was uncomfortable, embarrassed and had a great deal of anxiety driving that car. That was unacceptable, unprofessional and dishonest- never again. Attached are some (not all) damages
Nov 29, 2024 · Vinnie Buithese guys felt so scammy i didn't pick up the car, choosing to cancel my trip to the bay area. The first strange thing is they require you to show proof of insurance, or purchase it from them. Not great, but only a minor hassle if you have insurance. for me, the truly unconscionable thing is their policy (yes it is in the fine print, but it's so unusual, I'm not surprised most people miss it) to take a security deposit of $500-$1500, and reserving the right to hold that deposit for up to 20 business days. I did the math, and if they held it for the full amount of time, it would have appeared on my next credit card statement. I simply don't have that money to spare. Would not recommend, although the individual employees i interacted with were admittedly kind.note: this is the same company as 24/7 rental.
Apr 21, 2025 · Audrey MoyceDon't rent from this company: they are scammers. I rented a car in October of 24. They require specific paperwork documenting an existing auto policy, which they don't reveal that they need until a text message an hour before pickup. I produced the paperwork and brought it, but they didn't accept it. I purchased an additional insurance policy from their preferred broker. The vehicle was fine, but on the freeway, a rock kicked up and hit the windshield, causing a tiny chip. I (stupidly) pointed it out to the agent when returning the car, and he said they would have to file a claim. They filed a claim for $2216.53, an insane amount for an almost imperceptible ding, given that a new windshield costs less than $500, installed. However, the insurance company approved $1843 of that claim, and deposited the money to my account. 24seven demanded that I pay them the money, using Zelle. I did so. It is now March. Despite many emails and phone calls back and forth, they have neither returned my $500 deposit nor explained why they are not returning it. I will never rent from them again, and neither should you.
