Payless Car Rental, as part of the broader car rental industry, generally aims to provide affordable options, often positioned as a budget-friendly alternative. Payless Car Rental is conveniently located at 295 Lucas Dr, Detroit, MI 48242, USA. This address places it directly within the consolidated Rental Car Campus serving the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW). Being part of this centralized facility is a significant advantage for travelers flying into or out of Detroit, as it simplifies the process of picking up and dropping off rental vehicles.
For air passengers, direct and complimentary shuttle services operate frequently between the McNamara and Evans terminals at DTW and the Rental Car Campus on Lucas Drive. Signs for "Ground Transportation" and "Rental Car Shuttles" are prominently displayed within the airport, guiding travelers to the designated pick-up points. The shuttle ride from the terminals to the campus is typically short, allowing for a quick transition from plane to car.
For Michigan residents approaching from outside the airport, the location is highly accessible via major expressways. Lucas Drive is just off significant routes like I-94 and I-275, providing straightforward navigation from various parts of Southeast Michigan. This ease of access minimizes travel time and reduces the complexity often associated with navigating airport vicinities, making it a practical choice for locals in Detroit and its surrounding suburbs who prefer an airport pick-up due to convenience or broader availability.
The consolidated car rental campus model at DTW is designed for efficiency, centralizing multiple rental agencies in one location. While this can sometimes lead to shared infrastructure, it also means clear signage and dedicated lanes for vehicle pick-up and drop-off, which contributes to a more streamlined experience once you arrive at the facility.

- Fuel Options: Customers usually have choices regarding fuel, such as pre-purchasing a full tank or returning the vehicle with a full tank.
- Payless Perks Program: This loyalty program is designed to offer benefits like expedited service and potential discounts for frequent renters, though customer reviews suggest the "skip the line" benefit might not always be consistently realized.
- Extended Roadside Assistance: Payless often offers an optional Extended Roadside Assistance plan, providing assistance for issues like emergency towing, jump starts, flat tire changes, lockouts, and emergency fuel delivery.
Based on general Payless operations and specific customer feedback for the Detroit DTW location, here are some features and highlights:
- Airport Location and Accessibility: The primary highlight is its strategic location at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport's consolidated rental car campus. This provides direct shuttle access from terminals, making it highly convenient for air travelers and easily reachable for locals via major highways (I-94, I-275).
- Affordable Pricing (Potential): Payless is generally known for competitive pricing, aiming to offer more budget-friendly options compared to some other major rental brands. This could be a significant draw for Michigan residents looking to save on their travel costs.
- Brand Affiliation: Payless is often associated with Avis Budget Group, meaning it may leverage some of the operational infrastructure and vehicle maintenance protocols of its larger parent company. However, customer experiences suggest that the actual execution can vary significantly.
- Diverse Fleet Availability: The DTW location likely has a substantial fleet, offering various vehicle categories from compact cars suitable for urban driving to SUVs for Michigan's diverse terrains, providing choice for different needs.
- 24/7 or Extended Hours: Being an airport location, Payless at DTW typically operates with extended hours (e.g., 7:00 AM - 11:00 PM as per some listings), accommodating early morning and late-night pick-ups and drop-offs.
- Customer Service Challenges: Several customer reviews highlight significant issues. Complaints include "massive line to check out," "50 minutes to check in," and a general "lack of staff" leading to long wait times. Customers reported rudeness from staff and being abruptly interrupted.
- Confusing Shuttle and Location Information: Reviewers expressed considerable frustration regarding confusing signage and inconsistent information about the Payless shuttle and its shared location with Avis/Budget, leading to wasted time and walking.
- Vehicle Quality and Maintenance Concerns: Critical feedback points to issues with vehicle quality, including an electric car experiencing a "battery light" and "wouldn’t go over 25," requiring a tow. This raises significant concerns about pre-rental checks and the reliability of vehicles.
- Limited Staffing: A recurring complaint is having "only 1 person at the desk at 9:30 am on a Friday morning," contributing to long queues and slow processing.
- Inconsistent Fastbreak Benefits: Despite loyalty programs designed for expedited service, a reviewer mentioned needing to "wait an hour" despite receiving a text to "skip the line," indicating the Fastbreak benefit might not always be honored or effective at this location.

Its location within the airport's consolidated rental car campus means direct and frequent shuttle access from terminals, providing a straightforward pick-up and drop-off process for air travelers. However, it is critically important for prospective renters to approach this location with realistic expectations, particularly given the consistent themes in recent customer reviews. While the allure of potentially lower prices exists, the trade-off may involve frustrations related to customer service and vehicle reliability.
Therefore, for Michigan locals considering Payless Car Rental at DTW, it is advisable to:
- Allocate ample time for the pick-up and drop-off process, especially during peak travel periods.
- Thoroughly inspect the vehicle upon pick-up, documenting any existing damage, checking warning lights, and noting cleanliness, as suggested by customer feedback regarding issues like smoke odor.
- Be prepared for potential challenges with shuttle service and staff assistance, and consider having alternative transportation options if time is of the essence.
While the strategic airport location and potential cost savings might make Payless an option, being informed about the reported customer experiences is key to ensuring a smoother and more satisfactory rental journey for your Michigan adventures.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Use the AVIS shuttle!!!! (*EDIT - it is the very first bus stop at the shuttle area. As soon as u walk out of the airport. I missed the sign)There was no “Payless” shuttle (*EDIT - there is, but Payless is very small on the side of one of the Avis busses) so after watching every other one pass us by we hopped on the budget shuttle as it looked same building as Payless. Well that’s very inaccurate on google maps. It is on the other side of the parking lot separated by giant gates. So we had to figure out how to get out of budget lot to walk allllll the way down to the Avis lot, which is apparently the same as Payless? Well, after waiting in line and talking to an Avis agent they say Payless is in their “main building” across the lot. Okay…..so we walk all the way over there still not seeing a single sign that says “Payless”. Now we are waiting in line, going in 20 minutes, because there is only 1 person at the desk at 930am on a Friday morning. NEVER AGAIN. I should have rented from Enterprise like a smart person.
May 13, 2025 · Lori GrayI was visiting Michigan and rented an electric car through Payless. After a day of driving and charging the car once, we were getting ready to visit Grand Rapids when the battery light came on and the car wouldn’t go over 25. We had to scrap our plans, and take a tow truck back to the airport during rush hour to drop off and pick up a new car. Although we received a text from the insurance company to skip the line to quickly transfer cars, the employees working at the desk rudely and abruptly interrupted us as we were explaining our situation and text message and made us get into line. We then had to wait an hour for three groups ahead of us because of how slow the employees were getting through them. If I could leave 0 stars I would.
Jun 12, 2025 · Seth MorrillThe two stars I left were earned by the vehicle and the people that helped me when I picked up the truck. Drop off is where things get bad. Despite the fact that I topped off the fuel about a mile and half from the drop off, I was charged $182 for a refill for the second consecutive time of renting from Payless. I also had the woman that was checking them in mark down that it had a full tank because of my previous experience with them. The truck has an 18.2 gallon tank. That means I was charged $10/gallon as though the tank was bone dry even though there was barely room for 1/10th of a gallon. They have really good prices. Just make sure to save any gas receipts. Based on the reviews, this is a common issue with Payless. It took about a week to get things fixed last time this happened. Hoping it doesn’t take any longer than that this time as well.
Jun 15, 2025 · Rick BoyerYou will wait an extremely long time in line as they share a building with Avis. There is no separate line for Payless, and there were only 2 employees working at the 9 available stations. Would not recommend using Payless for your rentals. Pay $20 more and use a different rental company.Update: I have now been standing at the counter with the agent for 20 minutes (this is not an exaggeration) while he tries to figure out how to activate my reservation. He cannot figure out how to use the computer and keeps saying “the code isn’t working” - I cannot make this up, but the other agent has now helped 3 separate groups of people while I stand here…. Do NOT use Payless
Jun 12, 2025 · Alex GeisenhoffNeeded a car last minute for an emergency. I originally went to Expedias website (another can of worms) and ended up getting a car from payless, without really knowing. This may pick up a bit difficult, because none of the shuttles at the airport have payless, or even avis/Payless so I went to avis not knowing where anything was. Thank goodness There was an attendant that I could flag down to point me in the right direction, but there usually aren't many attendants around. Either way checkout was fine, i didn't know I was getting an electric car, so I switched that out, which cost me about five dollars more day, which was whatever. I had got protection from Expedia's website, but apparently that doesn't carry over to the actual car rental place because I decided/ had to buy vehicle protection again.... Do not buy vehicle protection from Expedia cuz clearly it's gotta be a scam... I told them I may need to extend, because I didn't know how serious my emergency was ....But instead of telling me that they charge a higher rate due to availability, she just said call and do it later.... Basically nothing was explained. I ended up being charged an extra a hundred and fifteen dollars for an extra four hours, instead of my original rate of thirty five dollars per day. Even when trying to extend, they said, I could do it online, but you can't because of expedia.... maybe you can but I don't know. Then the hours kind of mess up flight plans, if you're flying out early because they don't have a twenty four hour dropbox. I was flying out at 7am and had to take the car in before then, but they don't have any way or other locations to drop off. I'm fine with whatever this time because it was an emergency but definitely next time, I would never think to even consider this place. It's not worth the uncertainty.
